I am 9 weeks out and having my 2nd period.  I have never had this kind of pain associated with a period, actually I don't know if I have ever felt cramps this bad.  It feels as if I am having massive contractions.  I can feel it from my pelvis all the way through my back and down my thighs.  I took 2 tylenol xtra strenght and got NO relief, I just took two more.  What is the next thing I can do.  I can't spend the day like this I am in too much pain.  I know we can't take nsaids, I am allergic to any codones.  Have any ideas?

Haven't had to worry about that for several years now but remember the pain.  How about a heating pad?

I don't have any answers, I just wanted to say I'm so sorry you are suffering and hope you find relief soon. Hugs, Rita

I agree with the heating pad suggestion.  Also, a glass of red wine always works for me!  Hope you feel better.

The wine sounds like a great idea.  It may numb the pain can I have that now that I have taken 4 tylenol?

Hey Gina... that's exactly how mine was.  The first period came and went like usual.  but then the 2nd period from HELL was debilitating!  I don't know if he was right, but my husband thinks that with the first period, there was still nerve issues going on...hence, not feeling so much pain.  By the time the 2nd one came around, the nerves were just fine.  He kind of thinks the pain was from all the stuff being shifted and such during surgery.  I don't know whether that was what it was, but i took it for what it was worth.  I ended up drinking some of my liquid lortab from surgery and falling asleep with the heating pad on low.  Thing is, that the cramps lasted for almost three full days.   AWFUL!  Good thing, the third period i had was just pretty much back to normal as far as pain goes.  Good luck...  and as awful as it is, "this too shall pass".

I took the four tylenol and I laid on my shins bunching myself in a ball, I could never have been in this position before surgery, 9 weeks ago and 52 lbs. ago.  I have gotten some relief from this combo.  I am still in pain but not the OMGoodness what am I going to do kind of pain.  I am sending my husband to the store to get me some wine and have myself a glass or two.  I am going to have to make it my business to find a pain med that doesn't give me a terrible reaction.  I have never found a pain med I can tolerate.  I am so grateful to all of you being here.  Thanks so very much.  I am going to rest now.  Gina  :  )

You might ask your doctor for a prescription for tramadol.  It's a synthetic codeine-like opiate, but it doesn't really feel too much like a typical opiate, nor does it have much of any potential for abuse.  You might also bring this up with your GYN; s/he may be able to address the big picture. Unfortunately, NSAIDs like ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) and naproxen (Aleve) work particularly well against menstrual cramps, because they specifically stop the production of prostglandins, chemical transmitters involved with uterine tone and the transmission of pain signals. I wouldn't recommend to anyone to try NSAIDs on their own post-RNY, though some RNYers who are far out use them occasionally under the supervision of a physician, usually in combination with a PPI like Prilosec, to reduce these drugs' upper GI risks. /Steve

If you're going to have some wine, don't take any more tylenol.  The combo can be hard on your liver.  Make sure you drink extra water tomorrow.  I've never regretted having my female parts removed (it was pre-WLS).  I always felt as though someone had punched their hand in through my navel and was trying to rip my spine out, and I generally tolerate pain pretty well (evidenced by the fact that I've been walking around for over a year with three ruptured discs in my lower spine).  Steve's suggestion for the tramadol sounds like a good one.  I think it is also called Ultram. Hi Gina, sorry you are going through such terrible pain I was opposite, my FIRST period after my surgery was the period from hell !! It hurt so freakin bad and I could'nt understand why. I was doubled over and the only thing I could take was liquid loratab or percocet. Tylenol sucks !!! Tramadol works pretty good when I don't have any percocet . Hope you get to feeling better! Zip...

ULTRAM!  Ask your doctor about it.  I have to take it.  I have PCOS and HORRIBLY painful periods.  It's been the only thing that helps.  They are tiny, NOT a NSAID and NON-Narcotic.... and for me they worked. I hope you find something that helps you! -Betty

I used to have periods so bad I'd have to go to the ER for a shot.  So I feel (or have felt) your pain.   The heating pad thing wouldn't work for me - would make me hot where I'd want to kill someone.   I used to just try to put myself out (take something "PM" where I'd just go to sleep).  Muscle relaxers also worked SOMEtimes to ease the cramping and achiness.   I used to get pain in my hip joints so bad that I thought my hip bones were literally slowly breaking.  It was debilitating.  Slow yoga stretches and deep breathing sometimes helped that.  I hope you feel better soon.

I had horrible cramps from the time I first got my cycle until I had my total abdominal hysterectomy ... my grandma used to place a heating pad or a ho****er bottle wrapped in a towel on my lower abdomen and it gave me some relief - and I used that for years until my surgery  ... I used to get soooooooo sick I would miss school or work on that first day .... make sure you make an appointment and check in with your GYN - (((((HUGS))))) hope you feel better ...

Hey Gina I just talked to my dr Wednesday and asked about this.  He said I could have a few midol if I was taking the prilosec or prevacid.  He said a couple now and then would not hurt.  I think you should ask your dr for yourself just to be sure.  He said we should not be taking these on a regular basis. Hope you feel better soon, I know what you mean!! God bless!

Oh Gina! My Sister! My Friend!  I am soo soo sorry you are in so much pain.  I wish I could take away your pain!   I hope by now you have found some relief.  Be careful mixing alchohol with tylenol.  Do you have any pain pills from surgery left over?  I still have a few oxycodone left.  I kept them in case I should need them.  Keep me posted as to how you feel.  Also please call me if you need to!  Even if it is just to vent and scream! Love ya! Lisha

Do you have any left over pain medicine from after surgery?

I know how bad my cramps get and one of those little pills (mine where sublingual) takes care of the pain all day.

I am so thankful to you all.  So, I didn't get the pain to go away but I did get it to subside.  A lot of the cramps lessened after sitting in my ball position and then, finally, this is going to sound weird beause I really was in intense pain but I had sex and I am not kidding, it helped ALOT.  I am going to talk to my dr. about having something ready for next time if there ever is a next time.  Also, I am so sorry to hear of all the women here that suffer so badly.  It is a crime really.  I wish that no woman here should ever feel that kind of physical pain.  Thank you all so much.  Gina  :  )
