Surgeon Testimonial

Alexander Nagle, MD
I can't say enough good things about Dr. Nagle. He listens, really cares and is there for you when you need him. Not to mention he did a great job!

Q: What was your first impression of him/her?

1.) My first impression was one of great relief. I had a 2 page long list of questions and he sat and listened and answered everyone of my questions. He drew a picture of what was going to be done and assured me this was a good thing I was doing for the furture.

Q: How did your impression change over time?

2.) All for the better. I asked to go back and see him a second time as the date of my surgery was getting closer. I just wanted to make sure, and felt meeting someone once was not enough. They got me in right away and again he listened and answered all my questions. I walked away knowing he was "THE MAN", chuckle, chuckle.

Q: How would you describe his/her office staff?

3.) Liz gave me her direct number and she emailed as well. She kept me in the loop concerning the insurance and was a GREAT help in that area. Afterwards when I had complications the staff was there for me 24/7.

Q: What did you like least about him/her?

4.) Nothing

Q: What should future patients know about him/her?

5.) That he has done this procedure with hundreds of patients. He is detailed, caring and has a wonderful hospital behind him, Northwestern Universary. You are in good hands with Dr. Nagle.

Q: How much does he/she emphasize aftercare?

6.) The Surgeon part is good, but I wish Dr. Nagle didn't have his follow up program through The Wellness Center. There is such a disconnect there and most end up not following up with them!

Q: Does he/she have a structured aftercare program?
He does not do any of the follow up care the Wellness Center does

Q: How did he/she address the risks of surgery?

8.) Truthfully, and factually.

Q: How would you rate him/her overall?

9.) Very Good!

Q: Which is better, surgical competence, bedside manner, or are both great?

10.) BOTH!

Gearing up for the holidays! Protein!
Hey Everyone

Ok, we are Planning, Believing
and well on our way beating all the pitfalls of Holidays and weight gain    Today's word is PROTEIN

Protein is a powerful friend for the Holidays.  If you are a newbie you have had this drilled into you but let's review for those of us that may have forgotten.

**Protein - if you are getting in the max, increase it just for the holidays
**Protein - eat often during the day for snacks as well as main meals
**Protein - eat your protein first.  Best for fighting hunger and last longer
**Protein - is number one for building and repairing muscle.  More muscle more fat burned
**Protein - all protein supplements are not equal, if you can stay with whey isopure proteins

Some of my favorite ways to get protein in are:

Lean roast beef, LF cheese and SF pickle roll ups
LF peanut butter on an apple

Blueberry Banana Protein Smoothie
8 oz of NS orange juice
scoop of vanilla whey protein
frozen blue berries
banana

Fage NF yogurt
SF strawberry syrup
Fresh Strawberries
scoop of whey vanilla protein
frozen sliced banana
Muesli (like granola)

Here is a great link that tells you everything you need to know for proteins:

See ya tomorrow

Gearing up for the holidays!
Hey Everyone

I hope your weekend was a great as mine...  Did cardio on the treadmill Saturday and took Sunday off.  Charlie and I went to see Jersey Boys and it was the BEST show  Then just for Charlie (born and raised in FL) it started to snow that pretty big flakes kinda snow.  She was running around in it like a kid.  She was a hoot

With the holidays coming up I thought in addition to us being accountable with our exercise I would start a daily thread where we could help each other daily with some tools for getting through the holidays and feeling good come January 2nd  Stay Tuned!!!

So my friends, Did You Move To Lose and or Maintain Today? Come on in and let us know how it's going for you and what you did to help with getting on track with your exercise.

Even though it's cold here, Rocky and I are going for a short walk and I have my class tonight, so I am going to try and get some arm work in before class.  If not, will be sure and do so tomorrow.

Stay Sexy, Sassy and Strong....

Take care,
Kathy

Gearing up for the holidays! Planning!
Hey Everyone
Can you believe next week is Thanksgiving  One thing we can always count on is the holidays creeping up on us too fast.  We can be successful eating through the Holidays.  We can continue to lose and feel good about ourselves come January 2nd   We will be posting a word a day (Monday - Friday) to help with suggestions for staying on track with our eating and exercising during the Holidays

Word for the day - PLANNING

With planning you can head off pit falls that come up and hit us in the face or should I say hips

Write down all the holiday events at work and with family.  Plan and buy your food.  BE PREPARED

**Plan your holiday get togethers and meals
**Plan your grocery lists
**Plan your food activities by writing them down on cards and put them on the Fridge
**Plan for office parties, if there are no foods you can eat, take  your own
**Plan for going to Grandma's house.  Re-work the recipes if you can or just take some of your own food.  If all else fails, take your own food, hide it from Grandma, push the fattening food around on the plate and when Grandma isn't looking feed it to the dog

Poor Planning, Results in Poor Results......  Planning Results in Positive Results

See ya tomorrow for tomorrow's Daily Word for Success

Rainy Friday....
Hey Everyone

Well I guess our nice days are gone and grey skies are here for months...hehehe and then snow  Do you have those days where you don't want to get out of bed?  I felt that way today and said, get on the treadmill, get on the treadmill, but didn't and now I feel like a slug

It's so true, when we do move it seems to energize us.  Sounds strange doesn't itI am going to get on that treadmill during lunch and I bet you all the tea in China I will be feeling better than I do now...this losing weight and keeping it off is so exhausting.  I hope I live to see the day we pop a pill

But until then!!!  Did You Move To Lose and or Maintain Today my friends?  Come on in and let's get caught up and take on the weekend, grey skies or not

Stay Sexy, Sassy and Strong

Fighting Holiday Stress
on November 11, 2008 12:00 am
Hey Everyone

It's cold, grey and raining here.....you would think it's November.    I tried to take Rocky for a walk but the wind was just to darn cold  So during lunch I am going to get on the treadmill.  Rocky had his check up today and he lost a few pounds.  The vet was like what is up with this, he has no fat...I guess we are walking to much  I promised to try and fatten him up

Do you believe we are a few weeks away from the start of the holiday season?  I just can't believe it  With the holidays comes all the stress of shopping, family, baking and cooking.  Finding the time to exercise can be your best friend and get you through this holiday season  .  Don't skip your exercise, make the time

So my friends, Did You Move To Lose and or Maintain Today?  Come on in and share with us what you are going to do to deal with holiday stress

Take care,

Adopted Me, I know sign language
on November 10, 2008 12:00 am
Hey Everyone,

This is a special dog and needs a special family to love.....

Cobalt (Petraits attached) is a magnificent three-year-old deaf Dalmatian waiting for the perfect home at the Save-A-Pet adoption center in Grayslake , Illinois . This handsome, active and cuddly guy knows sign language which helps when you want to communicate: no, come, eat and sit. He also knows how to sing which is very cute.

This active guy gets along well with other dogs and settles down nicely in the home; he just loves to cuddle with his people.

To meet Cobalt in person, please visit the Save-A-Pet adoption center in Grayslake at 31664 N. Fairfield Road . If you would like to ask any questions about him, please e-mail cobalt@save-a-pet-il.org or call volunteer Dominique at 847-726-1257. You can also call the shelter directly at 847-740-7788. He is healthy, neutered, up-to-date on vaccines, de-wormed, heartworm-tested and micro-chipped.

Build More Muscle....
on November 7, 2008 12:00 am
Hey Everyone

I just LOVE my Oxygen magazine....it's always loaded with great information and workouts  What I love also is the way it stresses the importance of the right food plus working out.  We need protein big time and here is a great alternative.  If you have not tried eating Bison I suggest you run, don't walk to the nearest store and buy some  Trader Joes have some awesome Bison burgers and meatballs.  With 3 times the iron of chicken protein packed bison is a great source of protein for us to build lean muscle mass.  And the more lean muscle mass we have the more fat we burn

I hit the gym today and did some lower body work with leg presses, lunges and side steps with bands.

So my friends, Did You Move To Lose and or Maintain Today?  Come on and let's hit it hard for the weekend

Stay Sexy, Sassy and Strong

Did You Move To Lose Today?
on November 6, 2008 12:00 am
Hey Everyone,

Well all good things must come to an end...  We have had the best weather for this time of the year, but now the rain and cold weather is on the way  They even mentioned the "S" word

Rocky and I didn't walk today, so I need to dust off the old treadmill.  I really hate the winter months...it would be a great time to try new things with working out but I seem to fall in a rut.  You guys need to give me a good kick in the butt to try new things this winter ok

So my friends, Did You Love To Move and or Maintain Today?  Come on in and let's get your boodies moving as the weekend is just around the corner

Hurry Get Oustide....
on November 3, 2008 12:00 am
Hey Everyone

Boy it was a long weekend  My husband had a small set back from his surgery so I didn't get a chance to go to LA.  But I got to work the boards this weekend!  What a hoot, we had fun and drama..just like in the movies  I also cleaned house, cleaned up the Halloween stuff inside and out and took Rocky to his final class.  I am proud to say he is now graduated to advanced

Is this what's it's like to live in FL or Cali?  MY GOSH, it was in the 60's this weekend and it's suppose to be in the high 70's today and tomorrow for election day.  This is November 3rd.  Hello it's usually snowing by now  So as I was laying in bed this morning and tired out of my mind I thought to myself, I have months I can lay in bed when the wind chill is 40 below and snowing.  Let's go Rocky I said and we took a very long walk in this glorious sun shine.

So my friends, Did You Move To Lose and or Maintain Today?  Come on in and let us know if the weather is nice where you are and what are you goind to do these last few days to enjoy and exercise...

Halloween Hangover......
on November 1, 2008 12:00 am
Hey Everyone,

Did you survive Halloween?  We did and it was so much fun.  I am trying to find some batteries for my camera so we can post some shots.

So, they say confession is good for the soul.  Did you or didn't you?

I ate a few pieces of chocolate but all in all I did pretty well.  Went next door and gave the kids all my left over candy.  The kids were thrilled, but Mom and Dad were not

It's suppose to be sunny and really warm for this time of the year, so I am going to burn some of those extra cals.

Take care,
Kathy

Happy Halloween - Put that candy down!
on October 31, 2008 12:00 am
Hey Everyone,

Happy Halloween  The little ones were so darn cute.  I noticed there were none this year scary.  They were all adorable.  I was a cereal Killer, yep had boxes of cereal all over the place with knives sticking out of the boxes.  Wig, make up and all.  My camera's batteries were dead but it was fun.  Needless to say I was the scariest thing on the block

Put that candy down  Let someone else go through the candy bag and chew gum (if it's ok with your surgeon) while doing it.    You can do this and the scale will reward you for not eating the candy

Now, back to watching those scary movies...how old is Jason now?  Michael and Freddy?

Take care,
Kathy

Are You In A Stall?
on October 29, 2008 12:00 am
Hey Everyone,

Did you see Biggest Loser?  If not, let me recap...Men lose soooo much weight.  And if you have watched that show they work their a$$ off during workouts.  So how can a man that is really big, work so hard to burn thousands of calories a day only lose 3 pounds in a week?

NOT EATING ENOUGH....  He admited he was not eating and was cutting way back.  This is a great example of how important it is to eat enough food.  If not, you body will shut down and hold on with dear life all those fat cells.  No matter how hard you are working out YOU WILL STOP LOSING.

So my friends, track everything  you eat and if you are in a stall...review the amount of calories you are eating during a day and make sure you are getting enough to eat

Thank being said, my friends Did You Move To Lose and or Maintain Today?  Rocky and I went for a walk as it was not as cold this morning...keep your fingers crossed it will be nice for the kids this Friday.  Here it can be snowing for the kids  Working the arms this evening...

I hope you had a great weekend  Sorry about missing our post yesterday, it was wild and crazy day  We woke up this morning with frost on the pumpkins and it was kinda pretty until I had to go outside  Rocky and I tried to go walking but the wind was soooo cold we came home fast.  I will be working out in the basement this afternoon during my lunch.  Plan on doing cardio only today.

So my friends, did you Move To Lose and or Maintain Today?  Come on in and let's stay on track and or get back on track!!!  Exercise is the key

Stress, Stress, Stress.....
on October 24, 2008 12:00 am
Hey Everyone

Man oh man.....just when you think it can't get any worst?  It gets worst  I am sure you are asking yourself, just how much more can we take  Stressful times like these can lead to us eating, not sleeping and the last thing we feel like doing is working out.

Like the old monkees song ":Going Down"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URb8h4dLKps  we all feel like we are going down....

NOW is the time to be dillegent in our clean eating and doing anything to move and exercise to help with stress.  Try water workouts, yoga, steam, a nice long walk.  Go to the local library and read a calming book.  Anything to get away and recharge your batteries

So my friends, Did You Move To Lose Today?  I am taking the day off and cleaning house....I hate cleaning house

When we report back here on Monday I want to hear one thing  you did to handle the stress this weekend

Walking In The Cold...
on October 23, 2008 12:00 am
Hey Everyone

For those of us that live where it's turning cold and the snow is going to be flying we hate to give up those wonderful walks outsite  And if you have a doggie they too love walking

Don't let the cold weather keep you from doing what you love...buddle up with a hat, coat and gloves and hit the sidewalk  Not only, will you feel refreshed after your walk  you will find  you are walking faster (freezing  your butt off helps pick up the pace)  And you burn more cals, as your body is trying to keep warm  So let's go people and don't forget to put a sweater or coat on your fur baby so he/she won't get cold during the walk

So my friends, Did You Move To Lose and or Maintain Today?  Rocky and I went for a brisk, long walk in the cold this morning.  And I hope to hit the bag tonight

Stay Strong, Sexy and Sassy

on October 17, 2008 12:00 am
Hey Everyone....

It's Friday and the week is almost over  Time to unwind and catch your breath....if you are like me you use your weekend to run around and do all the things you didn't get done during the week

In between all that you think I would have the nerve to tell ya to take time to move to lose  Yes I would   If  you don't have time to go to the gym then run around the grocery store.  Park far away, you know all those little things that make up for a work out when you have very little time  Don't forget to do some exercise that will help with all the stress we are all under these days.......  I will have some suggestions on that next week, so stay tuned

So my friends, Did You Move To Lose and or Maintain Today?  Come on in and let's end the week and start the weekend right!

I walked Rocky this morning, did 3 miles on the treadmill....  Hope to find time to hit the bag tonight but have house work to do.  I will be putting on the tunes and working hard

What do you do when you feel are  hitting a wall?   Change it up, do something new, different...fun

Confession Time - Best Halloween Candy Story
on October 15, 2008 12:00 am
Hey Everyone,

Humor gets us through our tough times and there is always a great lesson as well.

As we move towards a healthier life by losing the weight, it's always good to look back and confess.  It keeps us honest and helps us to never go back.

What is your most funny/embarrassing Halloween candy story?  Come on, I double dog dare ya to share with us.    If I can do it  you can to

When my son was young it was back in the day when nuts were putting razer blades in candy and parents had to inspect all the candy before kids could eat it.  My son was still  young enough that he listened to me without questioning me.  Enjoy those  years as they don't last long.

So I told my son Mom had to inspect all his candy before he could eat any.  My confession??

I went through his entire bag of candy and picked out all my favorites to eat and told him Mom had to throw those away as they were not safe.  And then I proceeded to eat them "all"  Yep, lied to my little baby so I could stuff my face with all the Halloween candy I wanted

As he got older he busted me on it and to this day he tells the story of how is "MOM STOLE CANDY FROM A BABY".  Oh the shame of it all

Ok, your turn, what is  your Halloween candy story?

Take care,
Kathy

Are you Moving to Lose?
on October 14, 2008 12:00 am
Hey Everyone.....

Well today was so busy I am just now getting a chance to post....  Got up this morning and went to the Y to swim some laps.  What a laugh    I can't put my face in the water with out a mask and if that didn't look stupid enough I am so slow....  I was only able to do a few laps but I guess that gives me something to work on....a goal.

I am going to do some bag work tonight  I need to put in a request for a biking, swimming and boxing smiley....

So my friends, Did You Move To Lose and or Maintain Today?  Come on in and let's get it going.

Stay strong, sexy and Sassy

Halloween Candy
on October 13, 2008 12:00 am
Hey Everyone,

I just love this time of the year.  We have the house decorated and the front yard is a grave yard.  Giant spider on the arbor and all.    I also have the inside of the house all decorated and my husband has starting to buy the dreaded Halloween candy  I am several years out and can eat candy without getting sick  So there are two things I have learned to deal with this issue....

1.) Buy only candy you don't like...yes there are candies I don't like, just keep the chocolate away from me.  Sit down and discuss with your loved ones and get their help.

2.)  Decide you are going to indulge if you can control it and increase your workouts to counter act the extra cals.  Do this ONLY if you have control

That being said, today I walked Rocky, ran a couple of miles on my treadmill and will work on the bag tonight....

So my friends, Did You Move To Lose and or Maintained Today?  Come on in and let's share and inspire each other.  This thread will get us through Halloween candy and more

Take care,
Kathy

My Story

Hello Everyone,

Here is my story, I am sure as we read each other’s profiles we see ourselves in them all....

I see pictures of me at the age of 5 and I was skinny as a rail. Boy do I cherish those pictures, chuckle, chuckle... We lived in the hills of WVA and at the time there was no work. My parents left the only home I knew and we also left my Grandparents and Aunt to whom I spent more time with than my Mom and Dad. We moved to Kalamazoo, MI where my Mom had family. All I remember is being tormented as a child. Was it the red hair, the freckles, my gap in my front teeth or the black rimmed glasses? No I bet it was the southern accent. Boy did they love to tease about that. Food became my friend.

All through school I was heavy and of course couldn't wait to get home and eat. The ride on the bus was so terrible. Kids making fun of you. We had a little corner store that my parents would ask me from time to time to go get some bread or pop. I dreaded those trips and my parents didn't understand. My reluctance was due to the name-calling I would suffer walking there and back not that I didn't want to do it for them.

There were a few times I lost weight, by starving myself mostly. But that didn't last, as we all know.

I moved away when I was 18 and did pretty well for myself and with my diet. Then I met my future husband to whom had battled weight all his life. This is both good and bad. Good because he understood what I was going through, bad because he loves to eat as much as I do. I ended up getting Mono 6 months before my wedding. While I was in bed for 6 months I put on so much weight, the day of my wedding I almost didn't fit into my wedding dress. What horror!

Married at 20, had my son at 21 and started on a road of never ending diets and failures. I am a STRESS eater, it's just my life has been filled with stress, from one crisis after the other. I am not complaining as life experience makes you who you are but, with my husband not being able to keep a job it was one move, change and loss after the other.

There was one time in my life that I had my eating and weight under control. I was looking pretty good ya know! I was on top of the world. Had a great job where I was traveling and then.... I found out my loved one was having an affair and that destroyed me. How can one to whom felt they were THE BEST they could be, ever recover from being made to feel you were not good enough? You don't!

For the rest of the time I have stayed around 220 to 250, huge for my 5'3 frame. But last year my blood sugar went out of control and this was the first time my health started to fail. Had to go on high blood pressure meds also. I told myself I could get this under control as my father died from complications from being a diabetic.

Well I did, I lost 60lbs and my sugar was back to normal. All was going great until I had another family crisis with my Aunt and Grandmother. We lost my Grandmother and my Aunt survived open-heart surgery, barely. Not only did I put the 60 Lbs back on but much more. I now weight more than I ever had.

I just couldn't get the weight to budge this time no matter what I tried.

Have you ever watched Oprah and her talking about light bulb moments? I had one when we went to Florida/Cruise.

I LOVE the water. We had not been down to Florida in over 8 years. In February we bit the bullet and went down for a couple of days to enjoy the gulf side of Florida and then catch a cruise out of Tampa. Sound nice? NOT!

It was a nightmare. It started with me having a panic attack at the airport concerned they were going to charge me for an extra seat. Then afraid I would need the extender seat belt. They didn't and I fit :-)

When we went down to the beach I couldn't walk far without being out of breath. Did I sit on the beach (I love the beach, I could sit there for hours)? Not on your life!!! I would never get back up, and I was feeling so bad already.

When we got on the ship it was just as bad. I couldn't walk very far it was hot all the time. The only excursion we took was a bus tour and then I had a hard time getting in and out of the seats. I was mortified beyond belief. I love doing stuff.

Coming home we didn't get home until 5 hours later than we had to, as I didn't want to fly stand by and end up in the middle seat.

Well that was that. I came home and made an appointment to start the process of researching and surfing the web using google.com and found the website here. This was March 26th of 2004.

I am going through Northwestern's Wellness Center (Chicago IL) for obesity and this program is great for getting you prepared for the surgery and life after. I saw the surgeon last week and now I am waiting for the insurance dance.

Will update as this progresses. Good Grief, I hope that wasn't a Kleenex moment :-)

Thanks for listening!
