I am the Director of Support Groups & Training for ObesityHelp's Support Group Leader Program and the Mental Health Professional Liaison.  I am responsible for our OH Groups community and training.

As a weight loss surgery long-term post-op since 2001, I am passionate about assisting and working with bariatric patients. One of my greatest WOW Moments is that after maintaining my weight easily for years, I experienced a transition that was difficult and regained 35 pounds.  Happily, I lost it and love helping post-ops that struggle with weight regain get back on track.  I just love everything about bariatrics.  Weight loss surgery coaching is the perfect blend of coaching and weight loss surgery patients to assist them in achieving each of their personal successes.

Be in the 8% Group!
on January 1, 2009 9:10 am
I posted this in my Back On Track Together OH Group.  I think it is very important as we greet the New Year today.  So, I wanted to share here on my blog.

Here we are - January 1st.  The day of resolutions.  I don't like resolutions.  I have made so many throughout the years only to experience yet another failure in losing weight.

New Year's - it provides a sense of hope and renewal.  When I think back over my dieting career and failed to achieve resolutions, is New Year's a set up?  We've been given a clean slate with yet another chance to ditch bad habits of the prior year and reach for your ultimate dreams of losing weight, getting back on track, etc., etc.

It has been reported that 92% of all New Year's resolutions end in failure!  Less than 1 out of 10 people will successfully accomplish their resolutions in 2009.  Yikes!  So, what do the 8% that reach success do?  How can we BOTT and be in that 8% that succeed?

The 92% that failed took on too much.  The motivation of January 1st can be compromised as we march on throughout the year.  The momentum of a January 1st mindset wanes.  They become overwhelmed by trying to do too much all of a sudden and give up.  Essentially, the resolutions are committing to do too much.  Life and the realities of day to day living set in and in a few weeks or even days into their reformed resolution-filled life, they gave up.

In the 92% group, they approached their resolutions with an "all or nothing" mindset.  Once the "all" was too difficult and overwhelming, they went into "nothing" and gave up.  Poof - another resolution ended in failure and accompanying negative feelings about ourselves.

Enough about the 92%, we want to BOTT be in the 8% group.  With the appropriate and realistic strategy, we can enjoy that 8%.  How do they do it?  They set realistic goals that are attainable.  In a previous post, I shared with you about creating monthly goals to be back on track.  Rather than make your list of goals to be back on track and commit to all of them all at once, break them down into manageable successes.  Be realistic.  One of my favorite quotes is "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."  You don't climb a mountain or travel a thousand miles all at once.  You success with the mountain or a thousand miles in steps.  Why not apply the same to being back on track?

So, if your ultimate goal is to be/stay on track, try these examples as your action steps:

* Rather than making a resolution to lose 50 pounds by June, commit to exercising a certain number of times each week.

* Instead of commiting to give up all carbs, commit to healthy snacks that are planned into your day.  Pass up the vending machine or baked goods at the coffee cart for healthy options you've planned.

* Rather than resolving to drop two sizes in two months, commit to losing weight consistently to reach your desired size.  You'll get there with the focus on losing weight sensibly.

* Instead of making a resolution to never eat out, commit to eating healthy all week and allowing yourself one meal out on the weekends.

If you want to succeed at your resolution to get back on track, think in terms of realistic steps to get there.  It doesn't sound as exciting as the resolutions that the 92% group make but they don't reach them anyway.

The point of New Year's resolutions are to take advantage of the clean slate, the hope and renewal we feel, along with the possibilities that are ahead.  Small changes made consistently will make the difference to achieve your desired success.

So, here's to all of us in the 8% group - Happy New Year!

Feeling grateful
on November 25, 2008 11:19 am
I love Thanksgiving. Before losing weight, a big part of enjoying Thanksgiving was turkey and pumpkin pie and stuffing and etc., etc….. I still enjoy Thanksgiving food but in moderation.

Thanksgiving is a special time for me personally. I always try to live my life in gratitude every single day. It is important to me that the people close to me always know how much they mean to me and how I feel about them. Thanksgiving allows me the official opportunity (see the calendar - it is an official day of gratitude!) to express my appreciation for the blessings in my life.

Thank you to my husband and sons….I love you always and forever. To my best friends and friends….thank you for the joys, laughs, and trust we share. To my always will be my boss…it’s been quite a ride this year and to my co-worker that are more my friends than someone I work with; thank you for your support. To my clients and professional colleagues…thank you for our work together. I wouldn’t be the person that I am today without all of you in my life.

Happy Thanksgiving!

With appreciation and deep gratitude,

Your health includes teeth!
on November 24, 2008 3:10 pm
I have major dental anxiety.  I don't like going to the dentist.  I put it off as I can.  Well, it caught up with me.  I lost a crown and it had a hole in it.  I went right in to have it put back on.  However, I waited a little over a month (getting my courage back up) to get a temporary and a new crown.  That little hole caused me to have to get a root canal.  Yikes.  Ugh.  Now I've got a bad tooth infection due to the root canal.

I'm big on what health is.  Since having my surgery, my diabetes isn't an issue, my other co-morbidities are a thing of the past.  Your health also includes dental.  I'm great about brushing my teeth twice a day.  What I'm not so great about is the dental appointments for other issues.

This whole thing has reminded me is that there are physical aspects to our health that include dentistry.  My new priorities are focus on my mental, emotional and physical health that include the dentist!!!  So, here's to your health - all parts of it!!

Don't Put Off Being Happy! Do It TODAY!
on November 19, 2008 1:58 pm
Are you putting off being happy until you lose weight? If so, you’re living in limbo. When we are overweight, we delay doing certain things, going places, and essentially delay our happiness. If not now, when? We put our lives on hold.

Today Is The First Day! Rather than delay participating in an activity or event until some magic point in the future, do it now. Enjoy where you are today. Guess what…if you make the decision to be happy now, no matter what you weigh, it will make your desire for emotional eating less. If you feel fulfilled and satisfied in your life, the need to fill yourself up with food will decrease. Life doesn’t start at a certain weight or body size. Live your best life today. You are so much more than a mere number on the scale or a tag sewn at the back of your clothes.

Live your happiness now.

What are you doing with your 1,440?
on November 13, 2008 8:46 am
There are 1,440 minutes in a day. Just as you budget and know how you spend your money, how do you spend your 1,440 minutes. The activities you do in your day are a reflection of what you value.

Do you say that you don’t value television but upon your reflection of your 1,440 minutes, your evaluation shows that you spend many of those 1,440s watching mindless television? For many of us, we say that we don't have time to exercise but, do we?

1,440 minutes is a lot of time. Every minute counts. Make yours count and reflect what you value and your priorities.

My Story

My name is Cathy Wilson and I had RNY Lap gastric bypass surgery in 2001. I've lost 147 pounds. In addition, I also lost my diabetes, GERD, sleep apnea, and arthritic conditions of my joints and spine. I went from a size 26, 3x to a size 4. Weight loss and maintenance, and behavioral health are my passion. I am a certified life coach specializing in weight loss and weight loss surgery.  I have a website which I update daily that focuses on weight loss surgery issues.  My website is www.LoseWeightFindLife.com.

It is a lifelong struggle that I’ve dealt with ever since I can remember. I went on my first diet at 14 years old and dieted ever since. I love helping others lose weight, maintain it, and achieve their goals. I tried all of the diets out there. I joined Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Nutrisystem, Gloria Marshall, Overeaters Anonymous, along with any diet out of a book or magazine that I could find. All in the hope of finding the magic formula for weight loss success. There were elements of the weight loss programs that I liked. Ultimately, I never attained permanent weight loss success. So, that’s why I’ve turned to coaching.

With weight loss coaching, we can create a program designed for you and just you. Sure, there are some common healthy habits you’ll need to embrace in your life but we can personalize and customize a program for you. I used to think if I had one-on-one access to my very own Weight Watcher leader, Jenny Craig consultant, or OA sponsor that I would have the answer I need. I found the answer and that is weight loss and life coaching. Another part of the answer for weight loss is to know that it isn’t about the food. What? It truly isn’t about the food. Eating emotionally or out of habit is what we do. Together, we can find out what will help you achieve weight loss, maintain that weight loss, and design the life you are meant to live. My life is completely different than it was six years ago. You can have that too. What I've gained is beyond what I ever thought I would have in my life.

I am a certified life coach specializing in weight loss. I completed all training courses in a life coach training program to obtain my certification and advanced certification along with a back on track faciliation weight loss course. I am a member of the International Coaching Federation and International Association of Coaches to stay involved and informed on all aspects of coaching. I am passionate about weight loss and am a member of the Obesity Action Coalition and a member of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery.

I am the Director of Support Groups & Training, and the Mental Health Professionals Liaison for ObesityHelp. I LOVE, LOVE my job. I get to work with OH Support Group Leaders, train them in the operation and set up of support groups, the surgeries, and nutrition. I have written a bariatric coach training curriculum for a bariatric coach training workshop for ObesityHelp Support Group Leaders. I am the trainer for this exciting and important workshop. In my career experience, I assist and support people in the areas of nutrition, physical movement and activity, behavioral health issues, and forming new healthy habits to not only lose weight but maintain as well. I have been a support group leader for the past five years in the areas of weight loss surgery and weight control.

I've also been employed with one of the most gifted bariatric surgeon and his very comprehensive bariatric program that is nationally well respected. I was involved with his practice, surgeons and obtained a solid foundation in weight loss, maintenance, health, nutrition, and fitness that I will always be grateful for. I was also featured in a marketing program for the bariatric program of the hospital where I had my surgery. I taped television commercials, was photographed for brochures and newspaper advertisements. It was a WOW Moment of a lifetime. I was very honored to be in this role to represent the excellence of this hospital in such an exciting way. I chose surgery to lose weight because I was diagnosed with diabetes. Surgery is a tool in order to lose weight and allow the creation of new habits to create a healthy lifestyle. The diagnosis of diabetes was the wake-up call that I needed in order to take control of my life and my health, and lose weight. I was tired of living my life through what I ate, what I didn't eat, what I weighed, my size, and the day my next diet would begin.

Today, I have a fulfilling life that I would have never thought possible. I no longer live my life centered around food. Losing weight and coaching has enabled me to live a rewarding life for myself and my family as well. I never knew life could be this great and it only gets better and better. Since having my surgery, I've become a licensed private pilot, walked the 3 Day/60 Mile Breast Cancer Walk, walked in competitive races, traveled to New York on the set of Good Morning America to watch my bariatric surgeon boss interviewed by Charlie Gibson, made close healthy friendships, love being a wife and mom like never before surgery, did television commercials and a professional photo shoot, model in a fashion show, and had countless WOW Moments of my own and share in WOW Moments of others that I assist through coaching.

My favorite shirt that I love to wear sums up how I feel: "Life Is Good"!!!
