Surgeon Testimonial

Ara Keshishian, M.D
It was great to finally meet Dr. Keshishian. He has a great sense of humor and did a very good job making me feel at ease. He answered all of my questions and backed it all up with studies and concrete facts. I feel lucky to have such a smart and thorough person working on my insides.

loss
Not two weeks yet, but already worried about my weight loss.  My fiance started low-carbing right around when I got home from the hospital, and he's losing a couple of pounds every few days while I hover around the same number.  I told him the other day, "It's not fair, I had a freaking SURGERY!" because he's beating me.  But I guess I keep forgetting about those 14 pounds I lost the first week.

Anyway, I really need to up my protein intake, but it's so hard when I'm not hungry and when so little fits in my new stomach.  If it were faster to eat protein I might be in better shape.

D'oh.

first post-op visit
on December 30, 2008 12:37 pm
We went to see Dr. K today for my first post-op appointment.  I got weighed and it turns out I lost 14 pounds this past week.  (Wow!)  But I guess that makes sense considering I've eaten close to nothing this week.  Haha.

So they laid me down in the chair, Dr. K came up to me and put his hand on my belly and said, "Ouch," and then he pulled my tube out.  It hurt, but most of all was surprising.  Then the other one.  MAN did that one hurt.  I don't know why but it hurt so much more, the pain kinda knocked the wind out of me.

But that's it!  My drains are out, I feel a lot better, and I get to eat more things now!

YAY!

(We've definitely turned a corner here.)

surgery
on December 29, 2008 11:44 am
My pre-op appointment the day before surgery with Dr. K was a bit of a nightmare.  It turns out that the person in charge of finances was out of work for a week and she hadn't yet gotten around to confirming that my loan went through.  Apparently, I couldn't see the doctor until that was done, so even though my appointment was for 1pm I didn't end up going into a room until 2:30pm.  It wasn't just my particular situation, either, lots of people were waiting a looong time to see him.

Anyway, once he comes in the room everything was fine.  He went over the procedure (turned out insurance wouldn't pay for lap) and told me where my incision was going to be and everything.  It was really quick.  Then I had to go over and pre-register with the hospital.  There was some more waiting there but then they just talk to you about hospital stuff and take any blood for tests that still need to be done and ask you questions and tell you where to show up in the morning.

I got to the hospital at 6:30am that morning.  When to the same place where I pre-registered.  They had me pee in a cup to make sure I wasn't pregnant.  They asked me some more questions and filled out lots of paperwork.  They had me put a gown on, some tights, and socks.  Then they put me on a gurney and started an IV.  Then my OR nurse came to talk to me and then they wheeled me closer to the OR and the anesthesiologist came in to talk to me and then finally I was taken to the OR.  I just remember looking around briefly and then I fell asleep and did not wake up until I was in my room after the surgery.

I was really sleepy still when I woke up.  There was a nurse there and she asked me if I could walk and I said yes but then when I got up I couldn't keep my eyes open so they sat me back down.  After that, the next few days were just a blur of sleeping, walking, taking my pills, and talking to my loved ones.  I took a shower at one point, which was nice.  The nurses helped and I sat in a chair and they shampooed my hair and everything.

All the nurses were really nice to me, they were great.  Another thing that was great about the hospital is that they give your support person complimentary meals.  That was such a relief because I was worried my fiance would go hungry.  Lol.

On the third day, I had a bowel movement and farted.  That was the sign it was time for me to leave.  I saw the doctor every day and he kept saying my labs were wonderful.  On that last day the nurse just showed us how to clean my drains and told us what I could eat and then we were off.

I think my surgery and my experience with Dr. K was really good.  There were some administrative hiccups but overall everything was great.  I felt great being in Dr. K's hands.

night before surgery
on December 22, 2008 7:00 pm
So I had my pre-op meeting with Dr. K this afternoon.  It went well: uneventful.  Found out that I'm having the surgery open and not lap because my insurance wouldn't pay for it.  Oh well.

We checked in with the hospital people, got some more blood drawn, and were told to be at the hospital by 6:30am.

So now I'm going to sleep.

I'm going to be new tomorrow.  Exciting!

liquid diet, day 2
on December 22, 2008 10:10 am
So I didn't take my medications last night (dumb) and I had the worst night ever.  I couldn't sleep.  I'd wake up every hour or so and just toss and turn.

Now that I know I sure better take them tonight.

Can't wait till my preop appointment with Dr. K today.  I want to know what my goal weight will be.

Tomorrow's the day!  WOW!

My Story

I've always been chubby, fat, or some variation. I've had successes losing weight with a few things, but it always comes back and then some. I'm worried about my health. I'm only 23 and I've already got a whole slew of things going on medically. It's time to try something else.
