Surgeon Testimonial

Wade Barker, M.D.
My initial visit with Dr. Barker was a bit overwhelming due to the number of people in the waiting area. After finding a seat I began to speak to other patients and it turned out to be a rather informative. Most of the patients consisted of those hoping to have surgery but there were a couple of post-op patients. So, it was good to hear about their experinces.
As for Dr. Barker and his staff, I am pleased so far. They are always ready to answer any questions I might have, no matter how simple or complex.

56 Pounds Gone and Feeling Good!!!
on April 28, 2008 7:04 am
Friday, April 25th was the fourth month since having my surgery on January 4th and I now weigh 195.  I started at 251 and wearing a size 18/20 in most clothing items and I am now sporting size 14 pants and large tops.  I'm thrilled with my progress thus far.  I wished I would have had the surgery long before now but I'm thankful that I eventually made the decision to change my life.

I have not had any complications and almost no issues with food.  I did have a dumping experience with spaghetti with angel hair pasta and ground italian sausage about a month ago.  I believe it was the ground italian sausage because I have had angel hair pasta many times before this unfortunate event.  I was nauseous, sweating, heart pounding, stomach hurting.  It was an awful experience.  I pray that I never have that experience again.

If anyone is contemplating having the surgery I say go for it!  You won't regret it.  It's the best thing you can do for yourself in an effort to become healthier and regain your life.
Until next time.....

Three Months and Still Holding Steady in the 40s
on March 28, 2008 7:19 am
Well I am feeling good and have lost a total of 43 pounds so far.  I am eating all regular foods except for a few items that are still hard to digest like chicken, beef, grapes and pineapple to name a few.  I hoped to lose at least 50 pounds by my three month anniversary but that didn't happen so I'm trying to stay positive.  Lord knows that I have been down this road before and experienced great disappointment so I am praying that this time around is different.
I am still wearing a size 16 so I am still only down one dress size since having my surgery.  That's another disappointment but I'm sure time will produce better results.  I am wearing a large in most of my tops and I have gone from a size 42D bra to a 38C.  Praise the Lord because the twins were too much to handle at times.
I have not exercised as much as I should but since the weather is getting nicer I am going to up my workout time.  My husband is also buying the both of us a bike so we'll start cycling together.  I have not ridden a bike in years so this will be a totally new adventure for me.

Eight Weeks and 40 lbs!!!
on February 28, 2008 7:32 am
Tomorrow will make eight weeks since my gastric bypass surgery was performed Friday, January 4th and I have now lost a total of 40lbs.  My size 18 clothes are too big but some 16s are bit snug.  I have decided that I will shop at Walmart for clothes until things stabilize.  I don't want to spend too much money on clothes during this time of transition.  Walmart will do just fine unless there's a special occasion and then I'll splurge.
I learned something new yesterday.  I have to watch the amount of salad I consume.  I bought a salad from the Olive Garden yesterday and ate some of it for lunch and two snacks.  That was a bad idea because by that evening I was glued to the toilet.  I love salad but I gotta take it easy.
I'm pretty much able to eat whatever I want but in strict moderation.  I've had one experience of eating too much and it doesn't feel good.  I'm glad to be at the point where I am able to broaden my food choices.  I have not had any adverse reactions to sugar and surprisingly have not craved it either.  I'm praying that things will continue to go smoothly.
I'll write more as I get closer to my three month mark.  Until then, good luck with your efforts to a healthier you.

Six Weeks Out and Feeling Fine
on February 18, 2008 2:09 pm
I know it's been more than a month since my last post but I've had female issues that have kept me under the weather for the past few weeks.  I was having very painful issues with fibriods.  I'm now practicing pain control and taking medication to cut off the blood flow to the fibroids until I can have surgery.  I plan to have surgery this summer so I'm praying things stay at bay until then because I can't afford to take six weeks from work.
I have lost a total of 32lbs thus far.  I must say that I have not had any major complications.  The only minor things that are worth mentioning are those times when I experimented with different food choices to see if I could tolerate it.  I went through a weird stage where I did not have an appetite, didn't have a taste for anything in particular and had like this metal-like/sour taste in my mouth.  I'm not sure what that was all about but I'm over it now.  One of the first things I craved was a salad and I ate a greek salad from Panera Bread with no problem.  It was so goooood!!!
I have not exercised since my bout with fibroid pain.  I have been literally  bed ridden with absolutely no energy.  I expect to start back exercising next week because I'm beginning to feel better each day.
Until next time......

Post-Op Visit with Dr. Barker
on January 17, 2008 1:15 am

I had my first post-op visit Tuesday, January 15th.  I have lost 13 lbs since my surgery January 4th, I am recovering fine but I'm just tired all the time.  Hopefully, that will improve over the next few months.  I also sweat profusely when I get dress, attempt to do laundry, make the bed, etc.
I have been walking 2.5 miles since Tuesday, January 8th.  When I drop my daughter off at dance, I go to the nearby walking trail Monday – Friday.  I can’t walk as fast as I use to but I’m sure the speed will return in time.  Before the surgery, I used to be able to walk five miles in an hour and fifteen minutes even at 200 plus pounds.  I’ll get there eventually.
That’s all for now, I'll write more later.

My Story

My story doesn't differ from most on OH.  I am a 36 year old wife and mother.  I have struggled with my weight off and on for most of my life.  I would enjoy maybe two or three years of being a normal size and then the weight would reappear.  I have considered weight loss surgery for quite some time but always thought it was too drastic of a step for me.  So, after many failed diets I am finally moving towards realizing my goal of a healthier me.
