Surgeon Testimonial

Denis Halmi, M.D.
My first impression of Dr Halmi was that he was a very quiet man but very direct and knowledgeable in his field of expertise. As I have gotten to know him by attending Staples Meetings I can see he has a great sense of humor too. The office staff, mostly Lisa and Ruth are just wonderful and very patient. Deanna Duvall, the nutritionist, is very knowledgeable and wants to share this information with you. She is very reachable and approachable. I have enjoyed my sessions with her.

Future patients should know that they are in very capable hands with this office and especially with Dr Halmi. There is a very structured aftercare program that lasts - FOREVER - and this is very comforting. He is not one of those surgeons who performs the surgery and then does not want to know you. He is with you every step of the way.

Dr Halmi addressed all the risks of surgery but I had already read up on them anyway so I already knew.

I was able to confidently put myself in Dr Halmi's capable hands and had a very successful surgery.

I am now post op and have nothing but a much higher opinion of Dr Halmi than I had before. He is a very talented surgeon. My scar is very minimal. I could not have asked for better care. He is the very best!

May the Lord plant a hedge of angels around you and give you an uneventful surgery. I am praying for you. “I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; Surely, I will heal you.” (2 Kings 20:5)

My Story

Minnie Mouse

This is how my original profile read: "My name is Jackie and I have been married to my wonderful husband Bill for almost five years now. I am a proud mother of a very active toddler. Since I had my 3 year old son, hobbies have become a thing of the past lol! I am hoping that after my surgery I will have more energy and become the kind of mother he deserves. I am changing insurers this month in my company's Open Season and will be going back to see my surgeon on Jan 10th - then we can get my approval process started and my surgery done - I hope! I love photography and am a professional photographer - part time. I also hold down a full time job. I am diabetic and have high blood pressure - I am looking forward to getting off medication and not being diabetic any more. My husband is very supportive of anything I want to do. He says if I want the WLS he will support me but if I choose not to have it, that would be fine with him too. I have researched the surgery for many months now and have read almost every published book on it. I feel I am ready....... just need to convince my new insurance company in January."

My new introduction should read that I am 8 months (almost) post op and down 85lbs. I am no longer diabetic and take only 1 small blood pressure pill. Everything is really good and I feel really fine!  Yahoo! I am not finished on my journey yet but it has been a great ride so far!

My story is probably very similar to many others. Overweight child, overweight adult and no hope of ever losing weight long term. There probably isn't a diet that I haven't tried with the exception of any with pills - I never tried pills - too darned scared of the after effects! I was brought up in Scotland where if food wasn't fried in lard, it wasn't food. When I look back on it, it is a wonder my arteries did not clog up by the time I was 20. My staple food was french fries. My mother did not believe in salad or any kind of healthy food so we did not ever have them for dinner. Everything came accompanied by french fries and on a Sunday we had roast or boiled potatoes. It wasn't until well after I left home I discovered that food did not have to be in batter or deep fat fried to taste good and that salad and baked fish could be quite delicious. I had never had rice or much pasta grwoing up - if my mother didn't like it, we never ate it. Thanksfully it has changed a bit now in the UK.

So I continued to eat incorrectly and then I came to America 10 years ago where food is cheap, plentiful and delicious.  I loved it and ate out many times a week. I tried the Atkins diet a few times, with a success of 30lbs or so at a time and gaining 40lbs back when I came off it. Then one day my doctor did some tests when I had a kidney infection and told me I had diabetes. I was horrified and what a wake up call! They put me on drugs for diabetes, one being glucophage. I was on it for three months and became pregnant. This may not seem strange at first glance but I was 46 years old and had been told I could not have children after three miscarriages  - when I was 26 years old - so this was somewhat of a shock to me - and epecially to my dear husband!!  My pregnancy was fairly uneventful apart from some bedrest - my blood sugar was well controlled by insulin and I had the most gorgeous little boy ever - Connor.  I love my little boy so much it is hard to put it all into words.... but it made me think about what kind of mother I was going to be when I was so overweight....

One day I saw a friend of mine, Lisa, and she told me she was going to have gastric bypass surgery. I begged her not to and told her how dangerous and drastic it was. But she was determined.... I saw her a few weeks later and thought - "Oh my goodness, she really did it!"  She looked so well and so healthy that it made me think that maye I should look into it...

The rest is history and all detailed in my blog but as of today I am 85lbs down and do not have one regret. I am so excited about life and this surgery, that my friend Sue Baker and I are starting a support group for people in Stafford, Fredericksburg and surrounding areas so that we can help and support others. If you are interested please contact me.
