Surgeon Testimonial

Darius Ameri, M.D.
Dr. Ameri is the best...he was very informative, and very understanding of the way that obese people are treated in the world..he always treated me with respect and did not treat me like a child that had done something wrong. My primary care mentioned to me the Dr. Ameri was too nice to be a surgeon because surgeons usually did not get personal with you just did the surgery and that was it...not Dr. Ameri. My opinion of him has never changed...if I had to choose again I would choose him in a heart beat. His office staff is wonderful...always helpful and attentive and very respectful. There is really nothing I can say that I did not like about him. Just speak with him ask him anything he feels there is no such thing as a stupid question and he will take as much time as you need to get your questions asked..I was never rushed out of the office. Aftercare is very important to Dr. Ameri and his staff they are right on the ball making sure you understand what it is that you are suppose to do and make sure you do it...yes he does have a structured aftercare program in which you MUST follow and if you do...then you should not have any problems. Dr. Ameri went over all of the risks up to and including possible fatalities. Rating Dr. Ameri if on a scale from 1-10 I would definately rate him a 9.9 because no one is perfect but he is close...I believe surgical competence and bedside manner are both important especially when dealing in the field with obese people...the world can sometimes be a cruel place when it comes to being obese so having surgical competence to be able to help people in this way and just treating people like a person not a disease.

Jannine, I just read your profile page for the first time and it was so encouraging for me. I too was opposed to the surgery and actually bit the head off my PCP when he suggested it. But then started looking at my 3 yr old and realized I wanted her to be proud of her mom and not embarrassed by having a big mother. So I have set my consult and I will see you at the meeting on 8/8. I will start off by telling you a little about me, I am 37 years old I have two children one boy age 14, a girl age 3. I am married to a wonderful man that thinks the world of my children and me. I have a lot of hobbies...I love spending time with my family and my children...I am a photographer at heart...I am told that my photography is a gift from God..and I have just realized that when you receive a gift from God you don't ignore it....I am in the process of starting a photography business out of my home so I can be here to raise my children and feel productive....being at the weight I am at makes it difficult to keep up with my children but I try my hardest to keep up...I love to do crafts and sing and work in the yard with my plants ...take my kids to the zoo and playground...

I have been overweight for as long as I can remember, at least that is what I was told.... I have been on several diets, different medications, and different diet programs. Nothing worked long term; I would loose some and gain twice as much back. I can remember times that different people in my life would try to give me incentives (what they thought were incentives) to lose by means of bribing me with designer clothing I also had a guy that I was dating offer to pay me to lose weight what a horses ass he was at the time. Unfortunately that is not the affect it had on me at that time in my life.

Two Years Out and Still Going
on March 6, 2008 7:24 pm
Ok...so that was my story 2 years ago...March 6th, 2006 started my journey through Weight Loss Surgery (WLS),  I am now two years older I am 39 and now I have a teenage son who is 16 and my daughter is 5 yrs. old both of them are aware of the change in my eating habits since my WLS my daughter does not remember me as an obese person..when showed pictures of of me prior to WLS she does not recognize me.  My son still finds eating meals a challenge but he is still a work in process and making better choices in his meals because he know the drastic measures that I have gone thru to become healthier.  I am still doing my photography more now than ever.  It is amazing how much more of life you can experience when you are not carrying around an extra 190 lbs.  My husband and my relationship is better than ever he is the greatest man other than my father that I know...he loved me prior to surgery and loved me just the same after...we are able to do more things together.

New worlds have opened up for me since having my WLS working with my photography I am not tired and carrying all of my equipment does not make me winded and out of breath.  Traveling is very different..I no longer have to ask for an extension for seat belts on airplanes, going to the movies when I get to...I actually have extra room in the seat.  I am hoping that this year I will be able to go horse back riding.  At 357 pounds I personally felt I would hurt the horse if I tried to to go horse back riding so never attempted so that is one of the things I am hoping to try this year.

I love talking about my WLS and I am not embarrassed to talk about it.  I feel that if I can help someone in the process than maybe there will be one less person out there that will not be as terrified as I was prior to my surgery.  Don’t get me wrong I will share my story with anyone who asks about my story.  Weight Loss Surgery is a very personal thing and only the person who can make that decision is the one contemplating having the surgery.

Within the last 10 years these are the diets that I have followed:

1995-Dexatrim and Slim Fast for 5 months lost 20lbs gained 30+ back within two months

1996-Grapefruit diet-all I ate was grapefruit and drank grapefruit juice for 2 months did not lose any weight because when I stopped drinking I would start eating real food and not be able to stop because I was so hungry-Dexatrim and Slim Fast was also retried in this year

1997-Weight Watchers-started doing this and bounced in between the losing of ten pounds and gaining every other week. Doctor put me on the Phen in Phen Phen and while taking the medication after two weeks I was barely eating and started getting severe stomach pains The doctor stopped the medication and once it was out of my system I had extreme weight gain because for two weeks all I did was drink water it suppressed my appetite too much.

1998 -Weight Watchers-started doing this and bounced in between the losing of 15 pounds and gaining every other week

1999-Weight Watchers-started doing this and bounced in between the losing of 18 pounds and gaining every other week

2000-Weight Watchers-started doing this and bounced in between the losing of 12 pounds and gaining every other week .

2001-Weight Watchers-started doing this and bounced in between the losing of 10 pounds and gaining every other week.

2002-April of this year I had my gallbladder removed and after that had lost enough weight to be able to conceive my daughter and with pregnancy comes weight gain.

2003-Attempted Weight Watchers again and had the same results as before would lose five pounds and then gain 6 back and lose 10 gain 12 back.

2004-Family started doing the South beach diet and was successful for about one month I did not lose any significant weight. But I learned to eat different foods but not successful with losing weight.

2005-I have cut my portions and started eating off of smaller plates and I have tried eating three meals a day with water in between and I have had no successful weight loss this year.

I have been diagnosed with high blood pressure and I live with headaches. I can't take diet pills, of any kind, because of some of the medication that I am currently taking. I have tried going to an exercise facilities, but with my weight, I don't have the energy to work a full session. My main reason, for this is so I can LIVE and be with my children-- to be able to play games and sports with them. They want me to do so much with them that I just can't hold out to do. Both of my children are active in several different ways, which I can watch them play. But as far as joining or participating with them, I am often seen sitting on the sidelines waving. I am not doing this to be beautiful. I am 37 years old and have been overweight most of my life. I am doing this to have a healthier, active, life with my husband and children. My doctor told me if I didn't have something done that I would start have more serious medical problems that could lower my quality of life, and that scares me more than anything. I have tried many options, and I feel this is my last and only option left.
