Surgeon Testimonial

Matthew Christopherson M.D., F.A.C.S.
Dr. Christophersen is a very nice guy, very personable, willing to answer questions, very laid back. He spent a 1/2 more with me than was scheduled to talk and make sure all my questions were answered. He also has a great sense of humor. He was very to the point about risks and aftercare instructions. Was flexible in trying to find a surgery date that would work out for me. I would give him a 9.9 out of 10 overall, he is great!

Gee wiz, its always a long time coming when I finally get on here isn't it, and there is so much to talk about this time.

Well, well I have lost 128 lbs.  only another 28 lbs. away from my goal to be 1/2 of my former self.  I'm weighing in at 184 here lately, in a size 14/16, Large.  It has been quite a change, I'm able to eat just about anything, just in smaller portions.

My divorce is still non existant since I have virtually no money.  My ex ran off with my kids which has been very very hard.  I've seen them a hand full of times, but always supervised by him, I miss them very very much and will be checking into temporary visitation arrangements here next week hopefully.  I can't afford a lawyer, but when I can I will be doing everything I can to get full custody of my babies.

I moved to IL, after living with Jesse at his place for a few months we decided to get our own place together, things are great, he is really all I have keeping me together, I love him so much, and we have great things planned for the future.  His family has welcomed me with open arms which I cannot thank them enough, my own family, all except my mom has abandoned me, my grandparents even invited my ex to Thanksgiving at their place, but not me, I didn't get a call or anything, pretty shitty, pardon my french, but that's the deal I get right now.

I went from working at Days Inn over in Iowa to another hotel over in Illinois, I'm making more $, but of course I gotta pay rent and all now, so it doesn't really even out.  I had a load of car problems that I'm still paying off.  It all just keeps mounting up.

Thats my life right now in a nut shell.

Wow, its been a long time hasn't it, things have been crazy.  Surgery wise, I am 6 months out now and have lost 102 pounds.  I am at 210, down from 312, in a size 20 (XL) down from a 32/34W (4X).  I have been doing fairly well getting in all I need to, but my hair is really thinning and that really bothers me, I haven't been getting much exercise, been working swing shift, so that just wears me out.  I still can't eat lettuce which bites because I love salad.  I'm having a horrible time finding bras, I am down from a 48C to a 38 AA, it bites, but my man still like them, lol,

On to my personal life, my divorce is slowly moving along, I'm working so I can get out of here faster.  I am still seeing Jesse, we've been together for 7 months now, I love him, but I am really taking things slow with this relationship.

Well, I'll try not to be gone so long, lol

Well I am 9 days post op now, and at 275 lbs.  That is a total of 37lbs down from my highest.  Surgery went much better than expected and I had very little pain.  Eating kinda sucks, I'm sure I'm not getting in everything I need to.

Well, I guess I should be a little more prompt in updating.  I got approved last Friday & I am scheduled for surgery on January 15th.  Things have been crazy here at home so I am just hoping I can get through this.

I guess I haven't updated in a bit, things are going fast.  I had my psych eval. on the 20th, I'm not psycho, yay!  So they scheduled me with the surgeon this Thursday.  I also had my 2nd sleep study with the CPAP.  I could not handle the CPAP, so I am going to discuss it with Dr. Christopherson and see if I can forgoe that.  Anyways I'll update again after I see the doc on Thurs.

My Story

I am 26 years old,   I have 2 children, Kimberly is 8 & Joshua is 3.  We live in Moline, IL.  I have been a stay at home mom since pregnancy complications led me to quit my customer service job of nearly 5 years.  I have been overweight all my life, I was 240 when I graduated high school and it only kept going up after the birth of my daughter.  After a miscarriage in 2002 I was diagnosed with PCOS & IR, at the time we did not have insurance so I was not able to see a specialist to try to do anything about it.  After reading a lot about PCOS I decided to try to control it with a low carb diet & exercise.  By this time I weighed over 300lbs & we had been ttc another baby for nearly 3 years.  I was able to lose 60lbs successfully on Atkins & become pregnant in June of 2004.  In mid August 2004 I had another miscarriage, this really broke my heart & led me to seek food for comfort as I did when I was a child.  I gained 30lbs of the 60 back and then found out in November I was pregnant again.  This time I quit my job to really focus on taking care of myself & the baby growing inside of me.  I assumed that I had gestational diabetes during my pregnancy, but gave birth to a healthy 10lb 6oz baby boy on July 28th, 2005.  After Joshua was born I couldn't wait to get back to dieting & exercise, I actually love exercise for some odd reason.  However even with constant diet & exercise I was only able to lose 12lbs.  This has got me very frustrated, just since Josh's birth I have tried Atkins again, Slim Fast & the Biggest Loser diet & exercise program, but my weight just doesn't seem to budge.  As a child my mom had me try Weight Watchers, a Nutrisystem type program and Phen Fen, I lost very little on these & gained it all back of course.  I have had several friends & family members have WLS with varying success, but I had never really considered it until June of 2004 when I met Carnie Wilson.  I have been a fan of Carnie's since her days in Wilson Phillips, and although she was speaking at our hospital about her WLS, I went just because I was a fan of her music.  At this time I was in denial about my weight, I had just lost 60lbs and was feeling great.  Now though after having a couple years to think about it I am glad I attended the program because I really did learn a lot, I went out & bought both of Carnie's books which I have since re-read.  In late August I decided that I am fed up with the yo-yo dieting, inactivity, and I see how much it hurts my kids that I can't be as active with my kids as they would like or as much as I really want to.  I want to be able to take long walks with my husband & not get winded after going a block, I want to not have to worry about finding clothing to fit me, I want to be able to take my kids to an amusement park and ride the rides with them, not just watch.  You guys know how I feel, that's why I came here for support.  I thank you all for this wonderful OH community!

On Monday, September 25th, 2006 I attended the educational introduction class on WLS at Genesis Center for Bariatric Surgery in Davenport, IA.    It was a great class and the 1st step on the path to WLS.  We are now waiting for my medical records to be transferred in order to set up my next appt.  I am hoping for surgery in mid March.
