Holidays here I come!
on November 12, 2008 12:29 pm
Ok, this will be a big challenge to me as I begin all my cooking and baking for the holidays. I must admit I am a cookie-holic and could overdose on all those delicious Christmas cookies. But the new skinny me must remember I didn't come this far to throw it all away over a few moments of blissful cookie pleasure! I've gotta keep my head on straight and stay focused on healthy eating with an occassional cookie along the way. The key is moderation and not over indulging. So that being said I'm on my way to get an early jump on baking Christmas cookies. I promise to sample only a couple and let the kids sample the rest.

It has been 18 months since my surgery and I have reached a very healthy goal weight. I weigh 135 and have been maintaining this weight for a few months now. I actually wouldn't mind getting down to 130 just to be on the safe side but 135 is a perfectly fine weight for my body frame and I'm very happy with that.

This Holiday season will be so much fun dressing up and wear all the fun fall & winter fashions. I'm also looking forward to seeing all those relatives who only get to see me once a year. What a shock it will be when they see the new me!

2008 Graduation Ceremony!
on September 27, 2008 5:13 am
Last night the Center For Bariatric Surgery-St. Vincent Charity Hospital hosted a 1 year graduation ceremony for all patients who were 1 year post-op and reached their goal weight. It was a proud moment when I walked up on stage to hug my doctor and receive my certificate and special gold pin. They had a big screen up that p;ayed in the background and showed the before & after pictures of each graduate along with our total weight loss we achieved. They served a delicious dinner complete with yummy sugar free cheesecake that was so good. I attended with my father who was my biggest fan throughout my weight loss journey. Unfortunately, hubby had to work and my mother could not attend due to a recent surgery she underwent. But dad and I had a blast and it felt so good to see how proud he was of me. It was great hearing about everyone elses success stories and seeing how far they've come. Overall it was a great event, one that I'll treasure forever!
A few pics of the ceremony.

Questions I was recently asked....
on August 29, 2008 8:18 am
1.) What is your greatest accomplishment as a result of your weight loss success?

   A. There are so many to list but I'll narrow it down to one that seems to be the most exciting to me and never gets old with each new day. Waking up in the mornings with a smile on my face! Yep, getting dressed and trying on clothes is no longer a depressing chore that use to reduce me to tears or make me wanna climb back into bed and pull the covers over my head. I feel alive and vibrant now and I love waking up every morning and getting dressed. I've learned how to "eat to live" instead of "living to eat". Food is no longer an idol of mine, nor am I a slave to it anymore. I feel empowered when I make healthy food choices and as a result I am healthier & happier than I have been in over 10 years.

2.) Would you like to thank someone who was especially supportive to you?

   A. I would like to thank my husband John, and my parents for all their encouragement, support and motivation. They cheered me on with such enthusiasm an excitement that I rarely had a bad day. But most of all I thank my father for being my number one fan. He willingly accompanied me to my doctor visits and shared in my excitement as the pounds started dropping off. He matched every pound I lost with a dollar, which earned me a total of $112.00. It was a dream come true for me to see the proud look on my father's face when I finally reached my weight loss goal. I'm forever grateful to my family for helping me through this amazing journey. Thank you mom & dad and my dear husband, John! I couldn't have done it without all your love & support.

June-08 UPDATE!
on June 2, 2008 9:22 am
Wow, I can't believe it's been over a year since I had the surgery! I feel AMAZING!!!!! I have lost a total of 106 pounds! I currently weigh 141 pounds and if I never lose another pound I'm fine with that. I am wearing a size 8 and I feel very comfortable in my skin. My original goal weight was 135... but I'm ok with 140. If I lose those extra 5 pounds than it's a bonus!

Now the tough part kicks in..... MAINTAINING my weight and continuing to eat healthy and properly so the weight doesn't come back. I will be honest I'm very afraid that I will gain all my weight back... I've already had a few slips along the way nibbling on things I shouldn't have. This next year will be a real challenge to me as I try to keep on track and maintain my weight without gaining it all back.

My Story

I'm happily married to John for 25 yrs and counting and we have been blessed with 9 amazing children and 1 grandson (Dylan-1)! I have 5 boys & 4 girls, my oldest is 26 and my youngest is 4! Being pregnant so many times has left me with lots of left over baby weight that I never lost. I was always skinny as a young girl & teenager.... but when I started having kids I gainned 60 to 70 pounds with each pregnancy and never lost it all after the deliveries. So slowly over my child bearing years I gainned weight and now I am 100 lbs. overweight with a BMI of 42.3. After 5 years of trying to give it my all in healthy diets but seeing very little results I made the decision to have the surgery. I still have a lot of life to live and children to raise and I want to be able to participate in life not just sit on the sidelines while everyone else is having fun. So wish me well & say a prayer that my journey will lead me to the gift of living a healthy active life!
