Surgeon Testimonial

James Davidson, M.D.
He is matter of fact and to the point, but he always shakes your hand before and after talking with you. I think that is very nice. His staff is awesome, very caring and responsive. I really don't have any issue with him. He is a Christian and has Christian outreach he has done on his walls. That meant a lot to me as a Christian. I like the fact that there is a very structured aftercare program and he asks you the questions to make sure you have listened and understand the risks and what is required of you after surgery. I would rate him 10 out of 10. I believe his surgical competence outshines his bedside manner, but he is just a reserved person, I feel. His website says his staff will treat you "with a servant's heart".

Update
on December 16, 2008 3:19 am

So I was prompted by OH to update my profile. Two months out almost exactly and since the whole process started I am down 42 lbs. I'm happy with that especially since I've had some wine. Still can't eat very much. I never get nauseous but sometimes when I eat too fast I vomit or have the "rocks in my chest feeling". I'm now fitting in a 16W for the first time in years. :) Last night I posted on the vsg message board that I became frustrated because I couldn't eat as much chili as I wanted. I think it was emotional esp. because my car wouldn't start and I missed a basketball game I was looking forward to. I do miss the eating until you are stuffed feeling. I feel the same all the time when food used to make me feel physically good. I wonder if I am going to continue feeling this way. Food isn't the same pleasure as before.

In For the Long Haul
on November 16, 2008 4:21 pm
Well, I'm 4 weeks out from surgery and I am feeling good. I've been so lucky to have very few complications, well really none. The biggest thing that raises its ugly head occasionally is that I still am used to eating fast. It's been hard for me to slow down, and boy when I eat too fast, I do suffer for it. I feel a tightness in my chest cavity that sucks! My tummy never feels full, yet it never feels hungry. I've gone out to eat and am sure to quit before half of the food is gone. I don't want to do anything to mess up my staple line. I was down 30 lbs two weeks ago, and I haven't weighed since, but am soon to do so and got a scale that measures body fat and body water levels. I can tell my clothes are much looser. :)

New Day
on October 8, 2008 11:31 am
Well, today is the 5th day of my pre-op diet and thank the Lord I am feeling a little more human. I've been praying a lot. I have to remember what is waiting on the other side of this torture. Still very nervous, but also excited. Can't focus on anything except this board and the surgery. In six days, I will be weighing in again and must come down a bit. Got to stay focused. So glad to have found this board, it is a great outlet.

9 days to go
on October 6, 2008 10:10 am
So my surgery is scheduled for 10-15.  Last night I felt so frustrated and down because I was so hungry and ate soup instead of the shakes. But I got good support from the VSG board, prayed and asked for an attitude adjustment. Today I feel better emotionally. I think I was also tired because I haven't been sleeping well thinking about the surgery. I just need to get my head in gear is all.

My Story

Well, here goes...I was a fairly normal size, not skinny, but average until I moved out after college and was on my own. Ordering pizzas, fast food, little exercise if any...I really started packing on weight when I moved from E. Texas to Dallas in 1996. I was lonely and bored. Steadily I gained weight every year. I did have a stressful job until this past June. I was a social worker/investigator. Overeating and overdrinking at times became a way of life. Also, many of my friends are overweight and we like to go out to eat for entertainment. I didn't weigh for years. I did at times try various diets but gave up as I have little willpower. Here I am, age 37, and after I quit my job due to burnout, I am seeing the effects on my body. Looked into VSG and am very excited to begin a new chapter in my life! I know that the underlying issues that caused me to overeat are likely still going to be there, but hopefully this tool will help me choose other outlets for stress.
