My Story I am currently waiting for a date for the Verticle Sleeve surgery. I am 44 years old and because of my work (psychologist) I have known dozens of people who have had weight loss surgery---some have been successful and some have not. Despite all my knowledge, I cannot help myself to lose weight, nor can i determine what makes one person successful with something like the Lap Band and another abuse the band and their bodies and regain weight. i was a relatively happy fat person until 1 1/2 years ago when i herniated a cervical disk in my nek which led to a downward spiral in my health in almost every way imaginable including triggering the onset of diabetes (would have happened eventually anyway but the injury made it BAD). This past year has been a roller coaster of illnesses, pain, surgeries and recoveries. Now its time to get serious about my weight problem. If I can get my weight under control, I can probably reverse this diabetes and avoid all the otehr complications that can come with diabetes. I have a BMI of 40 right now. I am NOT looking forward to another period of medical incapacitation, but its not like I'd doing so great right now anyway. I am the primary breadwinner for my family and missing more work will be a real hardship. I am hoping that the sedentary nature of my job will allow me back to work relatively quickly. I appreciate hearing from from anyone who has had this surgery. I hate feeling like a "guinea pig" trying something "new" but I really think this surgery is for me. I have seen too many lap band failures and roux en Y complications, and I need help.
