Hi.. I am Karen from Alexandria, Louisiana.  I have been researching WLS for the past two + years.  My brother had gastric bypass in Dec. 06 and he lost so much weight and he feels so much better about himself that I knew one day I would have WLS... just not sure which one.

I had vertical gastric sleeve surgery on July 2, 2008.  I pray that this journey is smooth sailing and the answer to my prayers.

My starting weight was actually 275 and I lost 20 lbs on South Beach (lost 50 actually but gained all but 20 back).  On the morning of my surgery, I weighed 259.  I am aiming for 140... but maybe even 135.  Just waiting to see how I feel when I lose more.

Four months post op ... today!
on November 3, 2008 11:48 am

Four months out and down 90 lbs (lost 16 lbs pre-op) and have lost 74 lbs since surgery.  I am very excited about the way I feel and getting a little excited about the way I am starting to see myself.  I finally sat down and figured this out because the numbers keep looking "off" to me.  Here is a break down of my weight loss.

January 02, 08  --- 275

July 02, 08 --- 259

Nov 02, 08 --- 185

My first major goal is to weigh 140.  So, 45 more lbs to go.  After that I will decide if I want to lose 10 more.

3 month post op doctor's visit... update.
on October 14, 2008 7:26 am
Went to the doc yesterday for my 3 month check up.  He said it is not normal that I can’t eat meat at this point.  He feels that I possibly have a stricture.  He is scheduling me for an EGD with dilatation, as soon as possible.  I am not happy that they will be doing it under general anesthesia, but he said that is the only way he does them because they are uncomfortable for patients.  I will let you all know what day it is scheduled for as soon as I know.On a positive note… I weigh 189 this morning… 86 lbs lost and 49 to go!  Woooooohooooo

Finally lost 75.... 53 more to go! :-)

I guess it is like the little monkey that got its tail caught in the lawn mower, it is not as long as it has been! :-) :-)   That is the way I feel about losing weight... I finally hit my 75 lbs gone mark!  I have 53 more to go... not as much as it used to be! :-) :-)  I am thankful... very.

It's My 3 Month Surgiversary!!!
on October 2, 2008 12:33 pm

My three month surgiversary is today.  My thoughts on surgery thus far. I have lost 74 lbs (wanted to be at 75 but couldn’t make the scales move).

The positives:
  • Less knee pain, less joint pain and more mobility
  • Able to do more with the kids
  • Feel better about myself, not ashamed of how I look, not a hermit outside of work anymore.
  • More active in general
  • My children are proud of me and my weight loss.
  • I am a cheap date! J

 The negatives:

*  A few friends have been no so complimentary.  I hear: You have lost too much too fast, You are going to have saggy skin, If your boobs weren’t so large then you would look like you have lost weight, and the list goes on.

*       Not many clothes in my closet fit right now… either too big or too small.

*        Still can’t eat a variety of things.  No meats, eggs, very few salad dressings work.  Unfortunately crackers and peanut butter are one of the few things that I can eat without getting sick.  No cheese (which I miss greatly) and again, unfortunately, macaroni with tomato sauce doesn’t make me sick.   Funny how those certain carbs do not make me sick.

Anyway, that about wraps it up.  J  Would I do this surgery again?   Well.. had you asked me that question a month ago, the answer would have been a resounding NO... but as of today, yes, I would. :-)   Am I loving my sleeve?  Nah.. not yet... but one day when I can eat a better variety of things... I am sure that I will.  :-)  It is definitely a love-hate relationship… but love is prevailing so one day I am sure that love will win! Hahahahaha J I have a follow-up appt with Dr. H on Oct 10th.  I really wanted to be down 80 lbs by that time but I will be happy with 75.  J

Where are my sleeve sisters???  I would love to hear from ya’ll today.

Reached Onderland on 9/11/08
on September 14, 2008 8:37 pm

Weighed two days in a row to make sure I was really in Onderland!  Wooooooohooooooo I am!!!

I am ashamed to say that I have rode my bike 3 times and walked around the block two or three times.  That is the extent of my exercise.  I have had ONE protein drink since surgery.  That made me puke my guts up so I said the heck with that.  I try to get my protein in through food and after just having a complete blood panel done... all of my levels are within the normal range.   I drink crystal light most of the day... (sipping all day) and I try to drink at least 32 ounces of water per day on top of the crystal light.

So no exercise or protein.

Before surgery I could go one entire week without eating and MAYBE if I was lucky I would lose maybe 5 lbs (and that was if I was extremely lucky).

I had a complete and total hysterectomy at the age of 32 and I gained 30 lbs in 7 weeks after that surgery (no hormones for 7 weeks... I thought I would die).   The doctor told me then... the ONLY way you will lose weight from this day forward is if you exercise for it.  I hired a personal trainer and after 6 months of the gym 6 days per week, $1800.00 less in my pocket and doing the South Beach Diet VERY strict, I lost approximately 50 lbs.   I had three deaths in my family within 7 months of time and I stopped the gym and the South Beach Diet and gained almost all of it back.  I decided that I could no longer do it on my own... hence the decision for surgery.

I bought a new bike... rode it three times and Hurricane Gustav hit.  Now the sidewalks in my neighborhood are cluttered with brush and limbs and I can't ride until they clear it up.  Now Hurricane Ike is on it's way... so I don't hold a lot of faith in them cleaning up anytime soon.

I did purchase 4 dance exercise dvd's that I rec'd this week in the mail so I am going to start working out like that when the weather is not favorable for bike riding.
