Q: Has anyone purchased the OH magazine?

[Sep 5, 2008]     Love, love the magazine. It does take awhile to start coming. Well, worth the wait. A dear friend of mine and fellow life coach wrote a great article on page 39 of the Sept/Oct issue about "Mind Matters". Very proud of her. Q: I feel like I have failed.

[Sep 5, 2008]     Hey, Jennie. I'm pre-op and I read about these plateaus and weight gains so often from other bypass and sleeve recipients that it gave me cause for pause. Surgery is so drastic. Why go through this if I still have to struggle afterward? But the truth is surgery was never promised to be a cure-all. It's only a TOOL to help you help yourself. If you look at it that way and start pay attention to calorie intake, you'll recognize why your weight reduction has slowed down or stopped. In the end, it's still a number's game. Figure how many calories it takes to maintain your IDEAL weight. Never exceed that number, and your weight will continue to drop---regardless of how gradually---until you reach your goal, and then you will maintain that for the rest of your life. You can do it! Meanwhile, relax and enjoy the process.     — Alma M.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: Blocked stomach?

[Sep 5, 2008]     Hey Sue, it's Dawn, Ahh, the foamies. When I have gone one bite too far, my nose starts to run and then I get the foamies. It may or may not get worse and if something is actually stuck, I will start to slime. Your system is purposefully producing excess saliva and fluids to either get the irritant up or down. These blockages are very painful and to me are very much where my pouch is and it radiates straight through to my back. It can take a minute to get the food up, or hours as it did in your case. It is an awful experience and thank goodness it doesn't happen all that often. Each day is different, some days I have no problems with pork, others it is a joke to even think about eating it. It certainly has to be moist. Be carefull after these episodes as you will be swollen and irritated and need to take it easy... perhaps fluids or mushy foods. I know you don't have a pouch, but...it is good to err on the side of caution. I'm so sorry you had to leave such a fun event in such a way. I've never been to one, sounds like a lot of fun dressing up and enjoying great friends, music and food. When in public, it takes practice to continue to be completely involved in the event and practicing "mindfull eating"... but it is a must. Just do what you know you have to, tiny bites, chewed until the consistency of applesauce and go slowly. I have experienced exactly what you experienced with a boiled shrimp. I was chatting and grabbed it by the tail, took two quick bites and swallowed the whole thing while talking away and knew instanly that what was about to ensue was going to hurt.... and it did. I've never done it again, powerfull dissencentive to an inappropriate behavior... hence my tool was working. I started foaming, wretching and sliming and it was awful. Spent a long time in the bathroom and then stopping on the way home at random lawns. Sorry for the visual. Good luck to you Sue, we just have to be very mindfull. Q: Very Scared about having my ENDOSCOPY

[Sep 5, 2008]     Hi, Katie. I was nervous, too. I've never been put out completely before. I was worried for nothing. Here's an excerpt from my blog dated July 15, 2008: "I had doubts that I'd be completely out during the procedure. I've had an EGD scoping before six years ago and I was partially awake the entire time. It was called a "twilight" sleep----I could hear the doctor speaking to the nurse and felt something going on but I just didn't care. NOT THIS TIME! The anesthesiologist said, 'Take a couple of deep breaths. You'll be asleep in 30 seconds...' I thought, Yeah right. The next thing I knew, I was dreaming that I was tasting protein drinks for my diet and the last one made me throw up; I woke up in recovery, a nurse wiping something I regurgitated from my face. It must have followed the tube as they pulled it out from my throat. I was amazed at how quickly I had fallen asleep and how quickly I was alert afterward." It was the easiest thing, Katie. Relax. You won't even remember.     — Alma M.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: Help. Feeling very depressed and anxious after Lap RNY.

[Sep 5, 2008]     I havn't had my WLS yet, but I too suffer from depresssion and anxiety. Everytime I have had any type of surgery I have went through some of the same problems..you might say a flare-up. It will pass as your body starts healing, but it might not hurt to try a diff. antidepressant. I have had to have mine changed lots of times. Your body changes, our nutritional intake changes (esp. right after surgery) and you've had a lot of drugs in the hosp. during surgery that your body has to clean out....it all takes time. Just dealing with the increased pain can send our depression into that black hole, as well as having the 'post' op blues (like the postpartum blues after giving birth). I know I will be so excited, scared you name it, building up to my surgery that even though I want it, there will be that little bit of a let-down afterwards that can cause depression. I got it bad after my first child was born, and again after my hyst. I have found that using some sort of yoga or meditation (and it can just be concentration on taking deep slow breaths), or something spiritual, reading or watching something that will help take my mind away for a while and most importantly ... find something funny to laugh at. Your favorite comedy or sit-com or just a bunch of those funny e-mail stories that seem to go around..Laughing really does raise your mood level. Have some family or friends come over and help keep your mind active with them and their problems, or get on-line and keep busy reading and answering posts. Helping someone else with their problems can make yours seem really little, besides helping others raises our self-esteem which depression seems to take away from us. Hope this helps some. Using these types of things help us get through until our body gets going again.     — Vicki H.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: What can I do about my sweet tooth?

[Sep 5, 2008]     Hi, Mary! I'm pre-op. I've been taking Chromium Picolinate for years---recently about 200-400 mcg per day. I have to admit that I've been able to move away from simple carbs more easily, so this supplement really does tame my sweet tooth. I don't binge on sweets anymore. I can go all day without wanting anything sweet. Then dinner time comes and I still crave a sweet dessert after a meal. My suggestion is to substitute with something sugarfree. Get your sweet fix with as little sugar as possible. Hot cereal, like cream of wheat, sweetened with powder packets of sugar free cocoa works for me. Sometimes even just a couple packets of sugar free cocoa in water with a cracker on the side satisfies. Don't feel deprived. Let yourself have something, just control what and how much.     — Alma M.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: Help. Feeling very depressed and anxious after Lap RNY.

[Sep 5, 2008]     I went through something very similar. I chose accupuncture and exercise as my outlets and relaxation. I really did sleep day and night and put comforters over my windows so that I would not see the light. I went through this for 3 weeks, I realized after journaling that I was mourning the loss of food and the throwing a fit about not being able to enjoy my favorite foods whenever I wanted too. That's my story, not that you can relate, I suppose my point is to find a true outlet and stick to it!! Best of luck. Contact me anytime.     — Maria S.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: Help. Feeling very depressed and anxious after Lap RNY.

[Sep 5, 2008]     I agree with all of the other authors and just would like to add that you could be mourning the loss of your best friend..... food. Sounds strange, but it is true and very common. I suggest reading the book "The Emotional First Aid Toolkit" by Cynthia Alexander. A Psychologist who specializes in obesity. She delves into depression and helped me understand as well. I had depression and anxiety before along with a food addiction, after WLS, I still do and just have to work meal my meal, day by day to get through it. Things are much better now and they do get easier, but I understand when you are under the blanket of depression, it is hard to see the forest for the trees. Hang in there. Keep us informed. You can contact me if you'd like to keep in touch. Best of luck, Dawn Vickers, RN, BLC, CLC     — Dawn V.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: POLL: Who has had problems from surgery, and who have not.

[Sep 5, 2008]     I had surgery almost 11 months ago, and have lost 152 pounds. I have had no complications. YES, YES, YES, I would have the surgery again. And I will do whatever it takes to stay healthy now that I'm here! My lifestyle is completely different from this time last year and I'm not ever going back! :-)     — Cindy E.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: Help. Feeling very depressed and anxious after Lap RNY.

[Sep 5, 2008]     You are losing massive weight, quickly. Your hormones are stored in your fat cells. So guess what? Your hormones are being released back into your system - so you are going to be a crazy person for a month or so. I was. I wish someone would of told you about this. I had a 6 month education class where they told us about so many things (side effects, cause and effect issues, etc.) that could potentially happend after surgery - so I was ready for it all. The good news is it gets better. I would keep on your meds and even change things up to get more help through the rough patch. Good luck. Know that this is VERY normal.     — Jammie C.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: Blocked stomach?

[Sep 5, 2008]     Thanks to everybody who's responded so far. God, I sure hope this isn't going to become a recurring problem. I've been eating other meats (steak, ham, fish, etc.) without any problems, but that was the first time I'd tried a pork chop. I still want to blame the distractions of the faire more than the meat itself. Part of the problem for me, I'm finding, is that I totally control my meals when I eat alone at home. I measure out how much and I cut it up into tiny pieces, etc., so that I never push how much I'm eating. But it's far more difficult if not impossible to do this while out in public. Thus I'm finding that sometimes I eat faster and take bigger bites, and the discomfort comes too late. I even caught myself drinking and eating at the same time while eating out with my parents that first day home. It's all a learning process! Oh, and while I did not have RNY, I did severely cut back my sugar intake back in March, so much so that I get sugar rushes now if I have something that has a high dose--and it's not pleasant. I did temporarily blame this for why I threw up the gatoraide that day, but then I was throwing up plain water, too, so we ruled that out.     — Sue Z.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: Stomach Issues

[Sep 5, 2008]     I no longer have constipation issues and I even take 3 Ferrous Gluconate tablets a day (but then the ferrous gluconate is easier on your system than ferrous sulfate is). I do, however, have days where I run to the bathroom immediately after eating and have diarrhea. But I also had my gallbladde removed in March and if I eat something that is a little fattier than normal, this can happen...as it can happen to anyone who has had their gallbladder removed, whether they had WLS or haven't. I wouldn't worry about it too much unless it is a recurring problem day in and day out. Eventually your system will "normalize".     — Anya L.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: Help. Feeling very depressed and anxious after Lap RNY.

[Sep 5, 2008]     Although I have never been on medication I can understand how you are feeling. I can count on my hands how many times in my adult life that I have actually broken down in tears. Sine my sugery 8/28 I can't seem to stop. I have no idea what is causing this, but I wish it would stop. I know how you feel. I have no control over my emotions at all. I am also getting angry very quickly. Not a good thing since I already have a "irish red headed" temper.     — Phyllis M.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: Help. Feeling very depressed and anxious after Lap RNY.

[Sep 5, 2008]     I had the same thing happen, I remember my husband was driving by a stupid hot dog stand and I burst into tears and the joke is I dont even like hotdogs all that much!!! I felt like when I was pregnant and couldnt contain my emotions. How are you taking your Cymbalta? I was originally taking 60mg once a day and the doc suspected it wasnt getting all absorbed, so they switched me to 20mg capsules three times a day, and I noticed a huge difference after about two weeks. It DOES get better. It's like someone hit you in the head and you go whoa... what in Gods name did I do to myself. I am only seven weeks out, and finally I am able to drink a little better without pain, and eat a little better too. Keep up your head, this was the best decision you made and you will look back and wonder what the big deal was... at some point! Jennifer     — Jennifer K.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: Blocked stomach?

[Sep 5, 2008]     Sounds like you had that food get stuck. I can't eat porkchops either. But, you had something else happen to mess you up. IF YOU HAD RNY, DON'T DRINK GATORAID. IT'S LOADED WITH SUGAR.     — Shirley D.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: Help. Feeling very depressed and anxious after Lap RNY.

[Sep 5, 2008]     I think what you are feeling is very natural. You just went through a MAJOR surgery that is going to give you a LIFETIME of changes. You are overwhelmed that you went through with it, made it through fine, and now your journey is really beginning. It's okay to feel overwhelmed by the whole thing--it is a HUGE decision, a LONG process, and a LONG journey!!! Give yourself a great big hug, or have someone give you one who has supported you the most through it and tell yourself "I DID IT...I'M GOING TO MAKE IT...AND MY LIFE IS ONLY GOING TO GET BETTER AND BETTER FROM HERE...AND I DESERVE ALL THIS GOOD IN MY LIFE AND FOR MY BODY AND HEALTH!!! Good luck to you and keep the faith!     — Anya L.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: Help. Feeling very depressed and anxious after Lap RNY.

[Sep 5, 2008]     Yes I too have had the same issues our body do not process the meds the same way and they really want us to take a liquid form of meds as the cymbalta does not come in a liquid form the does I took before surgery make me feel drugged up so we are having to split the cap. in half this is working better for me and I am almost one year out and just now in the last two months able to take the meds as they were too big and I could not get them down I feel for you as it has been a rough road for me too Cindy     — Cindy B.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: help getting worried

[Sep 5, 2008]     I agree with everyone here. I think everyone, even if they absolutley know they need and want the surgery, has a few niggling little doubts as time gets closer to surgery. I had GBS 5-1/2 weeks ago and the first week I kept asking myself "what have you done to yourself?". Never again can I overdo at the dinner table, all that wonderful Mexican food I won't be eating. Oh well. I'll eat better, look better, feel better. Remember how it is to be so out of breath walking from your car into your office? That will all go away. You will feel better! Your health will improve. Isn't that what's most important? If losing weight and keeping it off was easy we'd all be thin instead of a nation of obese people. I think once it's done and you get over the initial recovery stages you won't regret it for a second. Good luck!     — Denise C.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: Stomach Issues

[Sep 5, 2008]     Yes, I believe this is normal for the first few months. I'm 7 weeks post-op and have some of both. My problem is mostly constipation and was told that iron pills will cause this to happen. I believe it will get better. Hang in there.     — Nevalle W.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: Has anyone purchased the OH magazine?

[Sep 5, 2008]     I get the magazine and it is well worth the price, but it is every other month it comes, not quarterly. The Sept issue is due soon. Lyn     — Lyn A.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: Blocked stomach?

[Sep 5, 2008]     Been there! It totally sucks!!! Only mine was chocolate protien shake and scrambled eggs (not a good combination)and throwing up on the side of the road with everyone who drove by looking on. Needless to say I am 4 years post op and still refuse to drink a protien shake or scrambled eggs.     — Carlyn M.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: Blocked stomach?

[Sep 5, 2008]     My post op history is similiar to yours. I had no problem until 7 months post op. Then the vomiting started, usually after I ate meat (any kind) but also if I was not paying attention to what I was eating and/or ate too fast. My surgeon did an upper GI and found nothing wrong. I am now 10 1/2 months out and last vomited 2 days ago. It is now about 2-3 times/week. There is very little meat I can eat - and then only about an ounce at a time. I eat a lot of cheese and drink protein drinks or supplements. I feel good and have lost 120+ lbs. I am hoping it will stop eventually. Eat slowly and do get enough fluids.     — Eleanor M.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: Blocked stomach?

[Sep 5, 2008]     Hi Sue, Sorry to hear you had such a bad time. I truly do understand. There are somedays I can eat [chewing correctly very tiny bits]. This week I have done well to not vomit everytime I try to have food. I only try to eat small tiny bits in the late afternoon when someone is home. It does not seem to matter in my case what, how tiny of a very well chewed bit I try. I do get all my water plus protein drinks in as well as vitamins. I have heard of others with this trbl for the first 6 month but not after that. I was told by some that the meat may be to fatty for us to eat. I would ask your DR. or NUT. Take care of yourself ,I know how scary it can feel and wish it on no one.     — Julie P.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: Blocked stomach?

[Sep 5, 2008]     I have found that I cannot eat pork. I have had a similar situation each time I have attempted to eat it. Pork and my pouch just do not get along.     — Kimberly C.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: POLL: Who has had problems from surgery, and who have not.

[Sep 5, 2008]     I am nine months out, I've lost 80 lbs including 20 I lost before surgery. I have had constipation, a little nausia, and had to have my gall-bladder out on the 4th of July. I was not prepared for the skin. It took a while to understand that I would never be able to eat the same again. Following all the rules, and changes was hard. Drinking enough, getting the right amount of protein. One day of doing this wrong will end u up feeling like crap. That does not go away, from what I can see. All that being said....Yes! I would do it again in a heartbeat. I am 49 years old, and off all blood pressure meds. I never did the sleep study. But I don't wake myself up gasping anymore. My agility is unbelievable. I cleaned out the refridgerater last week, a narrow side-by-side, and was squating down half in the thing, and smiled to myself when I realized I couldn't have done that before surgery!! I couldn't squat at all before, or i'd fall over! Lot's of WOW moments. This is an interesting question. Because as in any area of peoples lives. It is different for everyone. Complications are few with some, and alot with some. I wish you luck on your WL Journey!     — Lesleigh I.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: LapBand - some of LBDiet before surgery-possibly January 08

[Sep 5, 2008]     Ohhhhh yesssss! We all had to do it. And still do it. It has become second nature to use Oldies. Maybe we don't talk about it, but we do it. Keep reading and studying. This is a learning curve, and you will be learning something new everyday. I am 9 months out, and still learning things about surgery, how to get the best out of your tool, what to eat and what not to eat. This is all really important for making your goals come true. Get the book weight loss surgery for dummies. Also, you will find each surgeon, and bariatric center has different tips. Some say to wait an hour after eating. Some can drink up to meals, but not after. Some have the 30 minute rule. No fluid 30 min before and after. Best thing to do is what your doc, and nut says! Good luck to ya!     — Lesleigh I.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: LapBand - some of LBDiet before surgery-possibly January 08

[Sep 5, 2008]     I had RNY and that is exactly what I was told. Drinking with meals can cause dumping and make you very ill. Carbonation can cause gasses that will expand the pouch etc. If you eat while disctracted you eat more because you don't realize what you are eating.     — Phyllis M.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: LapBand - some of LBDiet before surgery-possibly January 08

[Sep 5, 2008]     I am having DS on Monday and I had to do all that plus I had to start exercising to show them that I was really serious about the program.     — Tim C.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: Has anyone purchased the OH magazine?

[Sep 5, 2008]     They state on the website that it can take months to receive the first issue as it's only released quarterly. Besides, I don't know of any magazine other than a weekly one that would send out issues within three weeks of payment. Patience. ;^)     — Sue Z.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: POLL: Who has had problems from surgery, and who have not.

[Sep 5, 2008]     I am 2 months out down 56 lbs. and would do it again in a heart beat! I am so proud of my decision. The change in eating habits isn't my choice any more.. You just do it... I'm so happy! Congrats to everyone else that has responded!!!!!!!!!1111     — Sally H.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: 1 week post op liquids not full filling what to do?

[Sep 5, 2008]     I too am one week out from RNY and still on liquids, but my doc's instructions indicate I can have mashed potatoes, cottage cheese, grits, oatmeal, cream of wheat, blenderized soups..believe it or not these things are filling..call your nurse and ask....Remember, there are NO STUPID QUESTIONS!!! Good Luck!     — Stephanie H.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: help getting worried

[Sep 5, 2008]     Jeff, I am only 2 weeks-15 days out and I felt the same way. I was crying while the anesthesiologist was putting me to sleep, thinking I wasn't gonna wake up-why am i doing this? but less than 3 hours later I was awaking to a new me. I am so happy even on post-op liquid diet-i am no longer on diabetic shots or high blood pressure meds. If I didn't lose another lb, just to be free from my co-mors is enough for me, the weight loss is bonus. Just keep us posted and we will be here for you. Do exactly what the doc says and you will be fine. Your OH family can help you through anything-they have helped me every step of the way and I haven't even lost my 1st 50 yet. talk to you later. Q: Has anyone purchased the OH magazine?

[Sep 5, 2008]     They are only sent out quarterly, I think. It should say it somewhere (probably small print) that it could take up to a certain number of days (or months) to get.     — Teresa V.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: POLL: Who has had problems from surgery, and who have not.

[Sep 5, 2008]     I would do it over and over again although I will never have to. This has taught me so much. I had gotten an ulser 3 weeks after my surgery and have burping constantly after I eat or drink, but I can deal with that.     — Carol W.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: help getting worried

[Sep 5, 2008]     Jeffery I was the same way, I absolutely loved food. It was my comfort, my love when I needed it, I love tocook taste eat go out try new things and eat until I felt like I was going to bust open! Now I have a whole new aspect on life and food. You have to really put your mind in a different frame of thinking, don't think about how hard it will be or how much you will miss the bad foods you love think about how good you and only you can make yourself feel. I had the gbs only 15 weeks ago and have already lost 90 lbs. I feel like an entirely new person, at first you may go through withdrawls from food but after about 1 month of not having sugars and fats in your food you won't even miss it any more. You will start seeing the healthier side of life and eating and you will feel good about your decission and also be glad you did it! Hang in there it will all go away really soon. Best of luck and be strong!     — Carol W.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: POLL: Who has had problems from surgery, and who have not.

[Sep 5, 2008]     NO problems at all. I would do it again if necessary. This won't be a fair poll because most people without problems have likely stopped getting these E-mails and gone on with their lives. I am about to opt-out myself.     — Nancy C.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: UNFILL?

[Sep 5, 2008]     If you are not having problems or pain "holding things down" you probably got it all. Stay on full liquids for 48 hrs to make sure things calm down (which sounds like you are already doing) I keep papaya enzyme on hand for those infrequent occasions. Q: help getting worried

[Sep 5, 2008]     Hi Jeffrey, I'm in the same boat as you are with the doubt meter. I'm told that it is perfectly normal to have uncertainties when it comes to having any surgery. And of course this is a life-long committment which even makes it harder since besides our spouses and family, food is our "best friend". Or in my case, STARCH and SUGARS. I'm going to have RNY surgery on October 1st...9 days before my 43 birthday. I have several surgeries, but I keep telling myself that the only difference is with this surgery, I'll actually be able to see some results! And once it's done, there's no going back. The unknown is always scary. But we can do this because our gut feeling from the beginning told us to GO FOR IT and we've come this far! You have the support system there for you and so do I. We want to live a longer life and do what's best for us physically, as well as emotionally. So the bottom line is....WE CAN DO IT! Keep me posted and my prayers are with you. Q: food getting "stuck" ??

[Sep 5, 2008]     I have the same problem when I eat or drink something too fast. I'm 7 weeks post-op and still learning how to eat and drink. God bless..     — Nevalle W.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: Home from Surgery Yesterday...What did you all eat for idea's?

[Sep 5, 2008]     First of all, if you just had surgery, most likely you're not EATING anything, you're probably drinking. I assume you're asking so you don't drink too much as protein shakes can be very confusing, and not that you're trying to figure out how far you can push it with the sugar. Keep it under 10 gms per serving and you should be ok. Some people can't handle this much, however, and some people get sick on sugar alcohols as well. But, you should call your doctor or nutritionist to get their opinions, as they should have given you this information before. Congratulations on your surgery and welcome to a whole new way of life.     — Shirley D.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: Home from Surgery Yesterday...What did you all eat for idea's?

[Sep 5, 2008]     I agree you should call your doctor or nut. I am having some problems with the nut in doctor's office getting important about diet issues. These people are getting paid to help take care of us during the aftercare of wls. Call and keep calling until you get the right answers, because sugar is something you need to be careful with. Ask for your food menu, this is not the time to guess your diet. It is upsetting when I read this kind of question because I know what happen to me early out from the hospital. God bless.     — Nevalle W.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: help getting worried

[Sep 5, 2008]     Hi Jeffery, I just asked this same question a few days ago. I asked where is all the success stories? All I had read was problem. It was really making me run backwards on doing this surgery. God bless all the folks (at least 30) that replied and made me feel so much better. It made me realize I am not doing this just to lose some weight but rather to have a healthier life. I';m 53 years old and if I don't get my weight under control all I can look forward to is LOTS of health problems. I might fall over dead of heart attack or get hit by a car but hopefully I will not have the weight related comorbities. I don't know how old you are but if you have excesive weight then you are probably looking at the same fate I am looking at without the surgery. Looks like there is more nonissue surgerys then there is problem surgerys. I think perhaps to follow the Dr.'s orders to the LETTER should min. out risk. Good luck donna     — Billy W.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: Home from Surgery Yesterday...What did you all eat for idea's?

[Sep 5, 2008]     Did your nut not give u directions for the first 2 weeks, and the next two week, and so on? Just curious, cuz they gave me so much info and it was all written down. The first couple weeks is important since you're still swollen from surgery and I believe you're just supposed to have liquids...or ultra pureed stuff...lots of protein shakes. If they didn't give u directions, I'd give them a call...as u should do what they tell u, not what someone like me from this board tells u. Good luck.     — Cj J.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: Home from Surgery Yesterday...What did you all eat for idea's?

[Sep 5, 2008]     Hi Ronda, What kind of surg did you have? Didnt your Dr. and NUT explain to you about not having sugar? Were you given a diet to follow when you came home and for the weeks, months to follow? You need to get your advise from the Dr. that did your surg. We have all had a surg done, but with as many Drs as there is there are also different beliefs on eating. I am 2 months out and no desire to eat sugar or anything else that will make my new tool NOT work correctly. I wish you well.     — Julie P.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: help getting worried

[Sep 5, 2008]     Doubt is very normal. I had RNY on 1/16/08 and can still remember how scared I was. They wheeled me into the operating table and I remember thinking "What the hell am I doing?". But now I am down 120lbs and I feel wonderful. I was 32 years old and weighed 326lbs. I can't believe I was so big. I can't believe I didn't do this surgery earlier in my life. Doubting yourself is normal, but you just have to start thinking differently. Start believing in yourself. You can do this and you will succeed!! Q: help getting worried

[Sep 5, 2008]     I am so happy and thankful that I had RNY Gastric Bypass 7 months ago. I had high blood pressure and was a borderline diabetic. I now have very normal blood sugar and blood pressure, without taking ANY medications. I have lost 85 pounds so far, and feel so much healthier and look better too. I try to stay away from carbs/sugars and eat meat, fish, tuna, eggs, beans, veggies. I drink a lot of sugar-free Crystal Light and sugar free Lattes. I drink a Protein drink once a day, I take 2 chewable multi-vitamins a day, chewable calcium. I have never thrown up or had any major problems. I was very tired for the first 3 or 4 months after surgery, but that did pass. I went through the period of missing being able to snarf-down on sweet foods and other bad foods but I got over that, and am glad I go over that, as I was eating myself slowly to death! I have small problems, like gas (I take Gas-x and Digestive Advantage, both sold at Walmart), and I occasionally feel a little nauseous. To me, that is NOTHING as compared to knowing that I am not going to develop Diabetes, and that I feel so much healthier and look better. I am so glad I had the surgery. Yes, I was scared, had doubts, had second thoughts, but I just told myself, "do it, just do it, get it over with!!!!!" I went through all of the Doctor appointments before hand, appointments with the Nutritionist, one appointment with a Psychiatrist, as was required by Insurance, I just kept on pluggin' along and got it all done; had an Endoscopy before surgery; it was a piece of cake, I don't even remember it. You can do it, just get it over with and soon it will all be behind you, just a distant and you'll be on your way to good health. I would do the surgery all over again in a heart beat. It was a big decision, but it was the BEST decision I have ever made. I now have a second chance at life, and it feels so good to be able to easily cross my legs, bend over, fasten a seatbelt, fit in to a booth at a restaurant, and so on. It feels so good to just "blend in" at the grocery store and feel so conspicuous. My joint pain is almost all gone. I could go on... You can do it sweetie, just tell yourself, "ok, I'm just gonna get it over with and it will just be a memory"......     — Gina A.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: help getting worried

[Sep 5, 2008]     Jeff- My surgery was 10/2005 and I do not regret it in the least. My trade off for the weight loss was debt (self financed my surgery), gas and bloating and a need for a lot of supplements for the rest of my life. In exchange, I got my LIFE! I now bike, go to the gym, dance, etc. I am stronger inside and outside as a result of this surgery. Do I make poor food choices from time to time? Yes, but at least I can recover from them and that in itself is empowering emotionally as well as physically. Half of your battle is your body and the other half of your battle is your mind. I do not know what kind of surgery you are having but regardless of the kind, this website is full of people who have made it work. You are ahead of the game because you have a supportive wife and family. If you want a new life it is there for you to grab it. I wish you the best of luck. Q: help getting worried

[Sep 5, 2008]     Hey Jeffrey, How you feel is totally normal and many of us understand and remember what you are going thru very well. I dont know what surgery you are having but I had my surgery 10 days ago and If you are like me you are my worried about how you will be after surgery than the actual surgery itself. Yes, life will forever change but I know it will be worth it.l I have been heavy and been thin and I know I am a whole person when I am thinner and feel good. Living life as an obese person is not living to the full potential you have ( at least for me). You have so much to look forward to. I know its hard but think about how much more you will get from your new life instead of what you are giving up. The reward will be worth it. Good luck and God bless you and your family.     — Rachelle C.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: help getting worried

[Sep 5, 2008]     everyone has doubts...trust me this is totally normal. It's a big (maybe the biggest) step in your life. The results are amazingly wonderful however there is still adjustment in your life. You have to want to be healthy and thinner MORE than you want to eat. This is a hard one....giving up the love/hate relationship with food. For me it's totally worth it. For people who can't do that I believe they will eventually not be totally successful. From now on...after your surgery that is....listen to your stomach...not your head...and you will do great. I was crying went I went into the op room...crying from fear and dissapointment in myself...lots of feelings. Once you get the anasthesia though...it's all u know 'til u wake up in your room and start the journey...well CONTINUE the journey I should say. Good luck.     — Cj J.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: POLL: Who has had problems from surgery, and who have not.

[Sep 5, 2008]     I am 5-1/2 weeks post-op (GBS) and at times I say to myself "what in the world have you done" but I've also lost 31 pounds (it took my 18 months to lose 30 pounds on WW!) I have had no problems so I hope a bit down the road I will be able to say that this was the best thing I've ever done for myself. Q: Any problems with flying after lap band?

[Sep 5, 2008]     I had no problems flying. I have two knee replacements, a metal rod and screws and a heart filter that sets off the security so if it did (which it shouldn't) what was one more thing. Have a great time. Diane     — Diane Y.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: POLL: Who has had problems from surgery, and who have not.

[Sep 5, 2008]     I am 14 months post op and have lost 96 lbs. The only 'complication' I had was my gall bladder out last Dec. (very easy surgery). When they removed it they found multiple old scars so this had actually been an on going problem that resolved other issues. It has been a blast--it has been a job learning the new life style but so worth it. Yes I would surely do it again. Christine     — Christine M.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: food getting "stuck" ??

[Sep 5, 2008]     I still have it occassionally and I am 3 months. Your bite or what you swolled was to big. Make sure you chew very good and wait between. It is stuck before it enters into your stomach because it is most likely full or it is having a hard time entering your stomach. Slowed down. When that happens I try to wait it out. don't drink it will only hurt more. Maybe sip a small amount of water. However, I have ended up making myself throw up and started over eating again, especially when it was really painful.     — Tammy M.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: UNFILL?

[Sep 5, 2008]     I had RNY on 7/17. My first experience, about a month later, was awful. It wouldn't go down, wouldn't come up, just sat there. This lasted over 2 hours. I thought I was giving birth through my esophagus. But as soon as it moved on, I was over. During the crisis, I couldn't lay down, sit down--all I did was lean against the bathroom counter or the wall, sipping ice water. Does anyone know if the pineapple juice works for RNY? I'll definitely remember the hot liquids and will try it should I get in this situation again.     — Mary P.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: POLL: Who has had problems from surgery, and who have not.

[Sep 5, 2008]     I had my surgery on March 12, 2008. To date I have lost 112 lbs. Surgery went well. Recovery went well too. I can honestly say I was NEVER in any pain. I stopped taking pain medicine the second day I was home from the hospital ... was going to take it as needed ... never needed it again!! The anastesia (SP?) was my only problem ... and it was not really a "problem". I think they gave me too much and it took me hours to wake up. I did the same thing 10+ yrs ago when I had surgery. So now I know my body does not need that much anastesia. So if I ever have surgery again, I will take to the anastesialogist about it. Was tired and weak for a few weeks after surgery. Wish I had done this years ago!!!     — Tammy B.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: Has anyone been to Dr. Marcel Molina of Houston Texas?

[Sep 5, 2008]     I had the gastric segmentation on July 25, 1995. I lost 40-50 lbs. total from the surgery. Now, 23 years later, I am seeking treatment after many, many years of complications, from a new bariatric surgeon. I went yesterday for my consultation and was advised by a very reputable dr here in San Antonio that they have done thousands of repairs on the Molina Band patients. I was always worried because I thought I was eating wrong, eating too much, etc. I found out that almost everyone that had this surgery was just like me. My stepmom and both of her sisters had this surgery with Dr. Molina. Two of them have lost all of their weight and kept it off for over 25 years. The other sister and me did not. My new surgeon explained that it depends on where the band was placed. Apparently, Dr. Molina did not watch where he was placing the band, rather felt around in there and "guestamated" where to put it. Patients that have the band higher up on their stomach apparently have more problems. The dr. told me that he has gone in and the scarring has been so bad that it looks like " a bomb went off" in there. I have years and years of regurgetation of all my food and sometimes DAYS without keeping anything, even liquid down, now. It's horrible. I know there are more people out there going through what I am going through and I feel sad that I had this surgery with the expectation of changing my life for the better and I have had to live through so much misery because of that decision ....oh, and I am still fat. LOL. It's terrible.     — Shannon M.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: POLL: Who has had problems from surgery, and who have not.

[Sep 5, 2008]     19 months out. LAP RNY on 2/15/07. My only "issue" was insomnia & four periods the first month after surgery. BUT... I wouldn't consider these deal breakers. I looked at them as the road I needed to walk down to get to the new me. Would I do it again? Sure. In a heartbeat. Original high 286lbs. 5'8". Wore size 26/28 pants and 20/22 tops. I am currently 143lbs. (exactly 1/2 of my former self) and wearing a size 4/6 pants and small or extra small tops. I am happy. I am healthy and thank my luck stars everyday for this surgery. ;) hope that helps you. good luck.     — Jammie C.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: college student needs help

[Sep 5, 2008]     Easy way out? Oh, please. I'm EIGHT YEARS PLUS out from a VBG (don't even think they do that surgery any more -- now it's a sleeve, I think) and I still have issues. I haven't eaten a sandwich since before George W. Bush became President the first time, and some foods still make me sick. Bottom line -- what your mother thinks or doesn't think about surgery has nothing to do with your decision. I was lucky to have a supportive husband and family, but I know that many of us on this site were not so fortunate. If you want this for YOU and for the right reasons, then go ahead. As for food restrictions, depending on the type of surgery you have and how your individual system adapts to it post-op, you can go back to virtually "normal" food within three or four months -- just not very much at a time, and probably split up into four or five meals a day. If you're having laproscopic surgery, four weeks should be more than enough -- I had open surgery and was back at work within four weeks. Best of luck to you, my dear.     — Cheryl D.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: POLL: Who has had problems from surgery, and who have not.

[Sep 5, 2008]     Yes, I had problems and a very big YES! I would do it again, but this time I would not think about and reseach the issues for three years. Everything has problems when you get into your sixtys, but the ral question you need to ask is how many problems did it solve. I had Diabities for 25 year, took 18 drugs and insulin, took High Blood pressure medication and had High Colestroal and took drugs for that. I had complications for the last 20 years from the diabities and they will not go away, but today I do not have diabities, high blood pressure or High Colestroal. I take one drug and my vitamin supliments, and that drug is for thyroid. I feel better than I every have, and weigh less than I did in highshool. Why would I not do it over again? Everyone will have something, and no one has everything, but I appreciate the fact that I get sick from sugar, fat and actually too many carbs. I just can't eat them, and I do miss pasta and white bread, but then I am alive, and will be fore a lot more years then any doctor would have given me just two years ago.     — William (Bill) W.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: When will weight loss slow down significantly?

[Sep 5, 2008]     I am down to what everyone says is all they think I should lose after losing 135 lbs, and the weight loss is slow from 15 pounds average a month to 2 pounds this past month. I still eat the same, but there is less fat to burn and my metabolism is slowing the loss down each month now. In my support group there are people that had surgery before me that are now staying the same for 3 months or more, some even have gained and last a pound or two from month to month. I want to take off another 20 pounds but at this rate it will take me 10 more months. Down pray for it to slow down too soon, as it will. Best of success to you and stay focused on your goal.     — William (Bill) W.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: When will weight loss slow down significantly?

[Sep 5, 2008]     I started at 315 lbs...I lost so fast the first month...(40 lbs) The second month was about 25-30...then 20...then 15... and again....then 10...then 8 and again......then 6...then 5...then 4...then 3... It just dwindled and faded away! I had 2 week plateaus at 6 mos...and they came often after a big loss of 5 lbs in one day...Then ther ewas NOTHING for weeks...Frustrating!( As we all know!) These were my approx numbers. I got sick at about 15 months...First cold in 2 years and lost 5 lbs...Almost immediately I gained 7-8 lbs and that is where I basically stayed...My lowest was 158...and I weighed 158 too....but now I maintain for several years at 165 ish....IHave tried a few times to get back into the 150s...But I just don't try hard enough...I had to diet when I got anemia because I was ordered not to exercise for several months and THAT was not helping me maintain my weight at all! so I had to diet for 6 months and it was hard! But I did it and am back to maintaining and eating more calories again without gaining...although i am up 3 lbs right now and I'm back to full working out ....so I'm not freaking out just yet...5 lbs and I hit the raw veggies and lean and NO CARBS for a while. (just fruit) I don't consider fruits carbs since they don't react in me the same as simple carbs...So....That's how it worked for me. Plus I just found out I am hypothyroid again...and so that 3 lbs could be my thyroid-metabolism out of whack again and causing me trouble...     — .Anita R.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: Any problems with flying after lap band?

[Sep 5, 2008]     My doctor advised me that sometimes the altitude or pressure or whatever of flying can make the band tighter and that an unfill before flying might be advisable. I haven't flown since I've had the band but when I do, I'll probably go in before hand and get a little taken out.     — Carla B.     (See other answers/post your answer)

Q: had RNY in June and for the last 6 weeks haven't dropped 1 lb.

[Sep 5, 2008]     hi! I , too, had my surgery in June and have lost a total of 49 pounds. I was dehydrated for 3 weeks...and didn't lose anything. I saw the nutr. yesterday and she said I was not getting enough with 1 oz per meal ..and at 3 months out should start working towards 2 oz per meal. If you are eating 3 oz per meal, maybe you are getting too much in?? I am losing slowly, but she said she isn't worried cuz I am doing everything right, except that I need to eat a lil more. I don't because I get that uncomfortable pressure when i eat too much. Anyways, I get about 60 g of protein in a day ( with shakes), about 75 oz of liquids in day and between 300- 600 calories in a day. I hope you can take something useful away from this posting.
